Milbridge, unexpectedly passed away on July 2nd, 2016 surrounded by his family at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Cappy Sargent was a lifelong commercial fi sher- man, devoted family man, and good friend. He touched many lives and was the kind of person you were glad to have known. Named “Stanley” at birth by his parents,
his nickname “Cappy” was granted as his infant demands for food rivaled barking orders made by a ship’s captain. He spent his early life growing up in a lobster fi shing household in Bernard, Maine. Fisherman around the harbor took early notice of Cappy’s interest in boats, his love of being on the water, and his determination to one day be a fi sherman himself. Cappy was a teenager when the Sargent family moved to Stonington. With it’s expansive ground- fi shing, scalloping and lobster fi shing fl eets, this close-knit island community was an ideal environment for nurturing the young

Boatbuilder of the Year and Boatyard of the Year Awarded to Hodgdon Hodgdon Yachts is honored to an-
nounce that the American Boat Builder & Repairers Association (ABBRA) presented the fi rst ever Boat Builder of the Year Award to Hodgdon Yachts and the 2015 Boatyard of the Year Award to Hodgdon Yacht Services at their Annual Award Ceremony & Sympo- sium in Portland The Boat Builder of the Year Award
was created to recognize a boat building company that through its commitment to innovation, sound engineering, quality workmanship, teamwork, and professional project management has built a vessel that has been successfully launched and whose process and product has made a lasting con- tribution to the recreational marine indus- try. The award was presented to Hodgdon Yachts for the recent successful build of the 100-foot carbon fi ber monohull Comanche and for being committed to innovation, quality workmanship, and professionalism that spans 200 years. “Hodgdon Yachts has launched over
420 vessels - many of which have brought new challenges and required innovation,”
fi sherman. Armed with a 16ft outboard st- eury boat for hand-hauling his lobster traps and taking himself clamming, paired with a crew position aboard his father’s gillenetter, Cappy learned the ocean and its extensive lessons from every fi shing industry possible. His own instincts for hard work and humility in addition to these vast fi shing experiences shaped the well-respected adult he became. A few years after graduating from Deer-
Isle Stonington High School in 1983, Cappy began building his fi rst scalloping boat, a 42 ft Duff y named Gale Warnings. In 1986, while building his boat at H&H Marine in Steuben, Cappy met his wife Tina. In 1990 they were married and moved to Milbridge. Tina and Cappy had three children, and over the following years Cappy was heavily in- volved in several fi sheries, including ground fi shing, urchin harvesting, scalloping and lobster fi shing. In 2004 he purchased a 42ft Wesmac, named Gale Warnings II, to further his venture of off shore lobster fi shing, which

he continued up until his death. In addition to his legendary work ethic,
Cappy was known for his skill, meticulous care of his boats and gear, honest nature, and willingness to share and help out. To his fi nal days, he still kept up his very fi rst outboard steury boat he had in Stonington, which was used to skiff out to his lobster boat. Cappy always took time to be a thoughtful advocate for the fi shing industry in the management arena as well. He valued friendships, attend- ed the annual Maine Fishermen’s Forum to stay in touch with people, and regularly hauled out at Billings Diesel & Marine in Stonington, a community where he always had a connection. Most of all, Cappy cher- ished his family. Tina, his true partner and shore support for the fi shing business was his devoted wife of 26 years. He passed on
his love of the ocean to his three children, Michael, Whitney and William, who all apprenticed under Cappy to earn their own lobster fi shing licenses and ultimately pur- chase their own lobster boats. His humble advice, hard working attitude and giving nature will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, three chil-
dren, his sister Sara Channel of Sedgwick, his parents Jean Ford of Blue Hill and Bill Sargent of Deer Isle, in addition to countless other loving family members and friends. A funeral service will be held at Narraguagus High School (1611 Main Street, Harrington, ME 04643) on Saturday, July 16th at noon. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of fl owers, please pay a kindness forward – brighten someone’s day, as Cappy would do.
