WILD WILD WEST Sets New Diesel Record at Bass Harbor Continued from Page 1.

on 3 July it was a beautiful sunny day, but the breeze was still with us. Sign-ups were brisk from 0800 to 0930

and when fi nished we had 79 entrants. The most noticeable new entrants was David MacCarthy’s STRAIT AHEAD [Custom 30; 547-hp 454 Chevrolet], who had come over from Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada to compete. There were several boats missing that

surprised us: Julie Eaton’s CAT SASS; Wes Shute’s DAYDREAMER [South Shore 30, 454 Chevrolet]; Galen Alley’s FOOLISH PLEASURE [30’ Custom Riley Beal; 712 Ford]; Bill Grant’s GLADIATOR [Crowley 36; 650-hp Cummins]; Galen Alley’s LOR- NA R. [30’ Riley Beal; 496 Chevrolet]; and Ed Shirley’s MISS KARLEE. In past years Moosabec Reach has been

running a number of Work Boat Classes, but this year opted to use the standard three races, which made the race committee’s job much easier. In the fi rst race, Class A, Skiff s 16 feet and under, Outboards up to 30 hp, operators up to 18 years old, there were three entrants, which was won by Noah Carver’s DAWN TREADER [Starcraft 16; 25-hp

Mariner]. Class B, Inboard, Outboard or Outdrive, 31 to 90 hp, has been won the last 14 years by Ralph Davis in ALPEX [Alpex 16] and today was no diff erent. Next up were the gasoline classes,

which there are fi ve of. There were no en- trants in Class A and just one in the other classes so the three in Classes B, C and D were all sent at the same time. Back for the fi rst time this year after developing an engine issue before the season started was Shawn Alley’s LITTLE GIRLS [28’ Calvin Beal Jr.; 514 Ford] and she continued her winning ways taking Class D. Second over the line was WIDE OPEN, the winner of Class B and Randy Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 454 Chevrolet] won Class C. Cameron Crawford agreed to run

WILD WILD WEST [West 28; 1,050-hp Isotta] against STRAIT AHEAD in the International Race (Modifi ed lobster boat hull, unlimited hp.) and it was close until just before the fi nish line when the throttle man hit the gas on STRAIT AHEAD and she jumped across the fi nish line for the win. In Class E it was going to be a battle between BIGGER DIRLS and MISS KATIE, which was won again by BIGGER DIRLS. There was only one boat in Class K LA BELLA

fi nished out as a sport fi shermen or a cus- tomer from Long Island, New York. She will have basically the same layout, but the galley is up. She is powered with a C-12 700 hp Caterpillar. Presently the engine is going and they are roughing in the interior. They have four other boats, three 38s and a 41 on order all sportfi shermen except one which will be fi nished out as a lobster boat.

Also outback they are working on the

new 41. She is being faired up so they can take a mould off of her. She is totally a new design: fuller forward, more fl air, stem tipped forward, more beam and no tumble home. They hope to have the mould ready later this summer.

Eric Dow Boatbuilder in Brooklin is

right in the middle of launching his remain- ing storage customers. This winter they stored three Handy Billy’s and 22 Herreshoff 12½s. In the shop is a Haven 12½, which is

getting her garboard planks put back on. They are also putting the fi nishing touches on a wooden peapod, which was started by her owner who had done a very nice job. She was taken from one of Howard Chappelle’s designs, but scaled down to 13 feet. She should be overboard in July.

At Buxton Boats in Sunset he is work-

ing on the 37 foot oyster sloop built in 1903 named the NELLIE H. He is fi nishing the sheer plank and transom before working on the interior, which will be very simple. She will then be covered and taken outside. Next he will begin construction of a 30

foot wooden lobster boat for a local fi sher- man. This boat will be a little diff erent than Peter’s other designs. She is getting more fl air, sharper entry, deeper amidships to accommodate the additional power and no tumble home. He hopes to start this project the end of summer.

Richard Stanley Boatbuilding in Bass

Harbor has received an order for a 38 x 15 foot tuna/6-pac lobster fi shing boat for a local customer. She will be designed for her needs and power, which is a 550 hp John

VITA [Northern Bay 38; 750-hp FPT] and one in Class L, WILD WILD WEST. They were run up the course at the same time with WILD WILD WEST taking the win. In the Diesel Free-for-All there were

nine boats on the line and when the fl ag dropped WILD WILD WEST jumped into the lead and won by three boat lengths. In the World’s Fastest Working Lobster

Boat six boats came to the line and the big winner was LA BELLA VITA. The fi nal race of the day was the World’s Fastest Recreational Lobster Boat and in a

surprise win LITTLE GIRLS was able to get out ahead of WILD WILD WEST and hold on for the win. STONINGTON – The week before the Stonington lobster boat races on 10 July the forecast was for a rainy day, and the weath- erman was right as we woke to showers. But despite the rain the races were on. The Stonington race is the most popu-

lar lobster boat race on the coast averaging between 100 to 120 racers and several hun-

Deere diesel engine. Richard said she will be fuller underwater, her engine will be under the platform, and for accommodations she will have a V-berth and head. The lines will be computerized for lofting and building should begin within the next month or two. Richard says that he has already ordered the wood for her and to put down a fl oor in the shop where she will be built. Scott Edgerly of Surry will be doing the top which will be built in fi berglass. Richard also said he is looking for a couple of helpers. This winter they rebuilt a 14 foot pea- pod, which was built in the 1940s and used by the Gott family. She had been patched a few years ago by another local builder and this time she needed a total rebuild and the only thing that they could save was her bow and stern seat. Presently in the shop is SEA CHIMES, a

lobster boat which was built by Arno Day in 1964. They have stripped some of her paint off , checked fastenings, made repairs where needed, replaced window trim, re-fastening the decks, and repainted. She is owned by a fi sherman from Frenchboro and should be in the water early July.

Behind this charming seaport village exterior lies the capability of a state-of-the art yacht yard and the facility of a modern marina. It’s this meeting of atmosphere and efficiency that makes Derecktor Robinhood stand apart from others. In Maine or anywhere else you look.
