dred spectators lining both sides of the race course. Surprisingly, sign-ups were steady right from 0800 to 1000 and when we were done there were exactly 100 boats. For the fi rst time this year we were

going to see Tom Clemons’ new boat MO- TIVATION, a Northern Bay 36 powered with a 1,000+-hp Caterpillar. The rumour was she was running about 50 mph and that could make for a great race between her and WILD WILD WEST. We also learned that Steve Johnson was still having issues trying to get his boat running to her full potential. I learned later he did fi ndthe problem, which was the stuffi ng box. A couple of other new boats made

their debut at Stonington. They were: Jay Clough’s ELIZABETH GRACE [Calvin 38; 700-hp Volvo] and Chris Pope’s OLD SCHOOL [Holland 41; 380-hp Cummins]. In Work Boat Class B (Inboards, out-

boards or outdrives, 31 to 90 hp) we had some fast boats. Reagan Anderson, who is just 10 years old, could not race in Class A due to the 40-hp Tohatsu on her 16-foot Carolina Skiff named TROUBLE. As the racers made their way up the course he held her own taking third. Wes Shute brought out DAYDREAM-

ER for the second time this year and defeated BLACK DIAMOND in Gasoline Class C. There was a good turnout in all the die-

sel classes and one, Class F was so big it was going to be split into two heats. Seven boats came to the line in Class B and at the start three boats, GRACIE, HELLO DARLIN’ II and Everett Beers’ MISS KARI LYNNE [Mitchell Cove 32; 220-hp John Deere] jumped out in front of the others. HELLO DARLIN’ II had discovered terra fi rma and was without her cage and it looked like she had enough for the win, but MISS KARI LYNNE slid by for the win. Class C (236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet) was going to be interesting as to date LAST DESIGN has been able to best CAT SASS. Would David Wiberg’s SANDRA DEE [Crowley 28; 315- hp Cummins] be in the mix? It was close right after the start, but it was clear that SAN- DRA DEE had the advantage with LAST DESIGN right on his stern and they fi nished this way with CAT SASS third. For years Andrew Gove’s UNCLE’S UFO [Northern

Bay 36] had been the dominate boat in Class L for almost 15 years powered with a 900- hp Mack. Two winters ago UNCLE’S UFO was repowered with a 700-hp Volvo, but this was the fi rst time we were going to see her since the engine change and now racing in Class J. The big threat was going to come from Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin Beal 36, 650-hp Scania], who lined up on the opposite side of the starting line. First over the line was UNCLE’S UFO fol- lowed over by BLUE EYED GIRL. Many of us were waiting for the face-off between MISS KARLEE, WILD WILD WEST, and the new MOTIVATION. When the fl ag dropped smoked spewed from WILD WILD WEST and she seemed slow off the line, but once it cleared she was off . Quickly she took the lead and win. with MOTIVATION slip- ping into second. The next race was Class M(A) (40 feet and over, up to 500 hp) and we were going to see Chris Pope’s new boat OLD SCHOOL, which took the win in her fi rst race. In Class M (B) KIMBERLY ANN [took the win again. In the Gasoline Free for All no one was

surprised to see LITTLE GIRLS in front, but back a boat length was DAYDREAMER. In the Diesel Free-for-All WILD WILD

WEST and MOTIVATION was going to go head to head again but with the same results. Third went to WHISTLIN’ DIXIE. MOTIVATION ran right back to the

starting line to run in the Jimmy Stevens Cup for the Fastest Working Lobster Boat and took the win. For the fi nal race of the day, Fastest

Lobstah Boat Afl oat, was again a battle between MOTIVATION and WILD WILD WEST, but where would LITTLE GIRLS fi nish? WILD WILD WEST took the lead, and second went to LITTLE GIRLS. The sad note, is that after ten years

running the Stonington races Nick Wiberg and family will not return to run the races next year.

Now it is onto Friendship on 24 July.
