Navy Accepts Delivery of Future USS Montgomery (LCS 8) From Program Executive Offi ce Littoral Combat Ships Public Aff airs


MOBILE, Ala. (NNS) -- The Navy accepted delivery of future USS Montgomery (LCS 8) during a ceremony at the Austal USA shipyard, June 23.


Delivery marks the offi cial transfer of


Montgomery from the shipbuilder to the Navy. It is the fi nal milestone prior to com- missioning, which is planned for September 2016 in Mobile, Alabama. LCS 8 is the sev- enth littoral combat ship to be delivered to the Navy and the fourth of the Independence variant, which is noted for its trimaran hull.

Tom Anderson, LCS program manag- er. “I look forward to seeing Montgomery join her sister ships in San Diego this fall and deploy next year.” LCS is a modular, reconfi gurable ship,


with three types of mission packages includ- ing surface warfare, mine countermeasures, and anti-submarine warfare. The LCS class consists of the Freedom variant and Inde- pendence variant, designed and built by two industry teams. The Freedom variant team is led by Lockheed Martin (for the odd-num- bered hulls, e.g. LCS 1). The Independence variant team is led by Austal USA (for LCS 6 and follow-on even-numbered hulls).
