www.mainescoast.com Publisher's Note Where has the summer gone? Days are
already shorter. I still have a window to put in the barn as well as fi nishing the shingling and building the work benches. The bushes in yard are out of hand and now I have to fi gure out how to get a boat from Manches- ter, MA to Winterport. I also have another boat in Wells that needs to have her engines started and get her up here. Both these boats were donated to the Library and hopefully I can sell them quickly as they would cover the cost of the much needed website. It does not take me long to look back

and see exactly where I spent my time, espe- cially with the fi ve lobster boat races behind us. The lobster boat races have been pretty exciting this year. We have had a number of new boats out racing and the big news was Cameron Crawford and WILD WILD WEST breaking the diesel speed record at Bass Harbor with a speed of 60.6 mph. We had a little problem at Moosabec as we were greeted by fog and lots of wind on 2 July, so they opted to run the following day, which was still blowing, but nice sunshine. Stonington was a little wet, but still a good turnout. Sad to see Nick Wiberg and family end their tenure of running the races, but for most ten years is way long enough. I did get the list of New England ship-
wrecks entered into the computer, about 4300 vessels, and now I am checking with a number of other sources and adding new vessels and fi lling in the details. The fi rst and major source will be from my uncle’s work, which I have already noted is adding more disasters and details. When working in the 1974 issues of the Republican Journal (Belfast) I checked the vessels that were
wrecked in New England and several were not listed. This could take awhile. For the fi rst time in at least four years
my GMC pickup had an issue. One would think with 352,000 miles there should not be a problem. For several months the head- lights seemed to be fl ickering, but otherwise she seemed to be fi ne . Then one day I was running down the mid-coast and a charging/ battery system error light lit up on the dash. I went to the dealer in Belfast and they said the alternator and battery were fi ne. Off I went and at the next stop, which was Padebco Custom Boats in Round Pond, she would not start. When I grabbed the positive cable it was loose so with their assistance we cleaned up the post and off I went again. I had no problem for a couple of weeks until I came out of Salisbury, MA and was heading back to Portsmouth, NH for the night the warning light was back on. I got to Portsmouth and stopped at the GMC dealer and they said they could look at it the next day. They found that the alternator was fl uctuating, but they also said I needed to replace all my cables and that was going to cost $1,400. Interestingly they did not have any of the parts in stock and would not have them maybe until the next day. I had already ruined the day and decided to head back to Bangor the next morning and hoped I would make it. The alternator gauge did not fl uctuate and I arrived at Bangor Tire for a 1 o’clock appointment. They checked the alternator and said that she tested fi ne, but we fi gured it was still the problem and it was replaced. An hour and a half later and $309 poorer I was back on the road. As summer speeds by, I hope you can get all the things done you want to!
