Forthcoming Events

By Keith Nicol

This is officially the busiest time of year along the entire coast of Spain or as it is known in tongue in cheek circles as Playas del Madrid. If you are thinking of travelling around Spain you should note that the middle weekend in August is usually the busiest days on Spanish roads as many Spanish holiday makers are either going on holiday or returning from it that weekend. And if you are on the N332 going through the signal lane stretch between La Mata and Punta Prima, expect that stretch of your journey to take from twenty to thirty minutes longer, during peek times of the day.

It goes without saying that in August it’s going to be hot, hot, hot so please take precautions, wear hats, sun tan lotion and take it easy while working on your tan. Brown is attractive: the red lobster look less so. Also note that August 15th, Assumption Day, is a Red Day and a Public Holiday. The San Javier Jazz Festival is coming to an end with just two more acts to enjoy: Friday 29th July 21:30 tickets 15€: Sarah McKenzie • The London Community Gospel Choir and finishing on: Saturday 30th July 21:30 tickets 15€ with Ellis Marsalis Quartet • Kevin Mahogany, Dado Moroni & Ulf Wakenius.

Don’t forget that the Hippy Market in Torrevieja is open every night and located beside the fairground which runs until the early hours of the morning. Torrevieja, Quesada and other towns all have their aqua parks open through to the beginning of September and the local Go Kart tracks in La Marina and Orihuela Costa are all there for summer fun and an adrenalin rush. In a slightly more relaxed vain, the monthly Craft Market and Meeting at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales takes place on the 1st Saturday of August and September. It’s free to visit and you can browse and buy many different types of art, crafts, try some of the free workshops or sample some local food and drink.

Torrevieja also has a number of Museums worth a visit. The best of these is the floating museum close to the Fishing Zone. The main attractions are the S-61 Delfin submarine, the only Spanish decommissioned Submarine that you can visit, along with the Albatros III Patrol Boat Floating Museum. The S-61 Delfin submarine offers people the possibility of visiting the interior of a submarine and imagine how the members of its crew used to live inside the same. The Delfin is a Daphne class submarine given by the Spanish army to the Torrevieja’s Council, thus becoming the “first floating museum” of its type in Spain.

For something just that little different The 18th Elche Guitar Festival takes place in the city of Elche until 28th July. This popular music event features different types of guitar music including classic and flamenco. All of the concerts take place in the Claustro de San José, except the final concert on the 29th July which will be in the Auditorio de la Rotonda del Parque.

Benijofar is honouring their Patron Saint, San Jamie to the 30th July. There will be parades of the fiesta queens, music bands and the big heads as well as the international gastronomy day, mad car race, a Sevillanas party, hot potato supper, bell ringing and of course fireworks. On Monday 25th July there are parades and activities during the day and at 9pm a Solemn Procession lead by the town officials, fiesta queens and town band, followed by a Grand Firework Display. Tuesday 26th July at 10pm there is the Traditional Potato Supper in the school playground. It’s you bring your own picnic, evening: you bring the food and the town hall supplies the hot potatoes, tables must be reserved from 6pm onwards. From 11:30 until the early hours there will also be partying to the Macro Disco in the school playground. The festivities end on Saturday 30th July starting at 8pm with the Sevillana’s Party with live performances and prizes for the best costumes and carriages in Calle Corazon de Jesus.

The 47th International Festival of Theatre, Music and Dance will take place in San Javier from the 3rd to the 23rd August. There will be 12 performances for you to enjoy in the Auditorio Parque Almansa. Tickets must be bought in advance via the official website or from the Festival Office in the Plaza de España, below the Town Hall. Please remember that all performances are in Spanish, even MacBeth.

Looking a little forward for planning purposes from August 31st to September 8th the Moors and Christians Festivities in honour of Our Lady of Loreto, will take place in Santa Pola. This will include the conquest and reconquest of the Moors and Christians, parades, fireworks, processions, playgrounds and sports competitions, all finishing on September 8th with the Solemn Procession of Our Patroness and Fireworks.

We try to ensure that all information on forthcoming events is correct. All information is sent directly to Keith from the organisers or local town halls and not just taken from other sources. We still advise you to check any information as there are sometimes last minute changes or cancellations which are out of our control.
