Mare Predicates BWP/NAD follows Belgium’s predicate awards, including the Elite Mare program. Mares can obtain several different predi- cates. Te ‘E-Label’ is the exterior label which is obtained by scoring at least a 75 at the time of inspection. Te ‘G-Label’ is obtained by passing a physical, including clean radiographs of the fore feet, hocks and stifles, and a breeding soundness exam. Te ‘P-Label’ is obtained by jumping five clear rounds at 1.40 meters at an A-rated or FEI recognized show. Once a mare has achieved all three labels and has one registered offspring, she is granted the highest award for mares, the ‘Elite’ status. We also offer the Select Mare Program, a performance test for

mares. Mares who have attained their ‘E-Label’ are eligible to take a performance test that consists of an under-saddle evaluation based on the 4-Year-Old dressage test and free jumping evalua- tion at 1.05 to 1.10 meters, or height appropriate for the age and skill of the mare as determined by the judge. We are proud to currently have 27 Elite BWP/NAD mares

in North America and several Select, E-, P- and G-label mares. Our roster of Elites include former Olympic competitors such as Rolette (Lester x Voltaire) and Werly Chin de Muze (Nabab de Reve x Chin Chin), who is from one of the most prolific dam lines from Belgium and owned by breeder Spy Coast Farm. High performance level mares comprise much of our mare base, includ- ing former Olympic, national and international competitors in all four disciplines: jumping, hunters, dressage and eventing.

FOALS Te number of foals

registered each year in North America contin- ues to grow. Foals eligi- ble for inspection must be by BWP-approved stallions or acceptable ‘outside’ stallions (non- BWP approved but accepted by BWP) and out of BWP approved mares. Foals receive full

inspection and evalu- ation, USEF lifetime registration, papers and passports from Bel- gium, DNA parentage verification through the University of California,

Davis and optional branding. (Branding was banned in Belgium and other European registries beginning in 2002 but it is still an option for our breed- ers here in North America.) All foals are named in conjunction with the alphabet starting

with letter A thru W (skipping X, Y and Z). ‘A’ was for the year 2000 and so 2016 has the letter ‘Q’. ‘W’ will be used in 2022, then we will start over with ‘A’ in 2023. It’s a great way to keep track of the ages of foal crops: we can easily track the BWP horses in each age-appropriate class. Foals are shown at liberty with their dam and judged on a

100-point scale, with 60 points for movement and 40 points for overall impression (conformation and presence). Foals that score 70–74 are awarded ‘Premium’ status; foals scoring 75+ are awarded ‘First Premium’ status. At three years of age, mares can be inspected for Main Studbook for breeding and stallions can be presented for stallion selection. Scores awarded to foals will determine their overall placing in the foal futurity. In the event that a foal cannot attend a keuring, there are op-

tions for registering without inspection and owners have until the age of two to bring the foal to a keuring for branding and futurity inspection.

STALLIONS Each year the BWP/NAD inspects between five to ten stal-

lion candidates. To become a stallion candidate, stallions must meet several criteria that are established in Belgium. Teir pedigrees must be pre-approved by the Belgian verband and contain four full generations originating from either the BWP foal book or a recognized WBFSH registry. Tey must undergo strict veterinary requirements, including endoscopic
