“Don’t try to train the horse above the level he was

advertised. We had a horse that was presented as Fourth Level. Te rider was banging on it, and Sue asked what she was doing. Te rider responded, ‘I’m going to teach it piaffe.’ Sue said, ‘No, you aren’t.’” —Jeff

KEEP YOUR WARMBLOOD CALM AND FOCUSED

Farnam Quietex II Focusing & Calming Paste or Pellets

Jeff Johnson of Impulsion Unlimited stands with their FEI Andalusian stallion, Jorongo MOR.

How to End The Visit JEFF: There is always this awkward silence after the ride. I may ask what are your next steps because I’ve assumed you are a qualified buyer—though there are some people who go around the country looking for free lessons. Now would be the time to review the sales contract. Buyers tend to rationalize when buying horses and it

becomes an emotional trip with a lot of money involved. HEIDI: It should not be scary to talk to the seller. You don’t need to be shy or embarrassed. Just say it’s not a fit or you’ll call later. It’s nice to call back and let them know if you are still interested or are passing on the horse. A lot of people don’t. Be honest with yourself and the seller. If you love

the horse, you will know it. If you’re undecided, say you’ll come back. But realize when a horse is on the open market, you can’t expect the seller to hold the horse unless you have some kind of agreement. That’s happened to me many times: the rider leaves, calls later and the horse has sold. If you really think it’s the right horse for you, be ready to jump.

v v v Both experts encourage a well thought-out approach

to the trial ride and to other aspects of purchasing a new horse. They stress that to make the right decision about a new partner, you’ll need to synthesize all the information reaped from your observations, your ride and your well-honed instincts. As for the process, plan ahead, stay safe and relax—good advice for just about any new venture.
