NEWS FROM ZONE TWO and YOUR ZONE TWO DIRECTOR NANCY SMITH, CFE

If you were in attendance at the recent Zone 2/Florida Federation of

Fairs meeting in St. Augustine, please stop what you are doing now and give our Florida folks a big round of applause. THANK YOU TO OUR FLORIDA FRIENDS FOR A GREAT CONVENTION! As our current IAFE Chair, Kent Hojem, stated during our business meeting ”it was a great networking opportunity and one of the best Zone meetings he has attended.” Attendance at this year’s meeting was at an all-time high for our Zone

2 folks. We had more fairs in attendance and more “fair people” in at- tendance than in previous years. With the exception of Delaware, every state in Zone 2 was represented. We are already looking forward to in- creased numbers next year when the meeting will be held in Orlando, Florida. To keep our Zone 2 folks up to date, I want to give you a few high-

lights from our business meeting. We were fortunate to hear from Marla Calico, President and CEO of the IAFE, Kent Hojem, IAFE Chair, Kathy Ross, NICA Board Member and Bob Johnson, President of OABA. Each one shared timely news in their particular sector of our industry. Miranda Muir, current Zone 2 YIP Rep gave an update on her area and

encouraged increased communication. The YPI group is busy with IAFE Convention plans for Las Vegas this year. Miranda also serves as our Zone 2 Facebook page coordinator and asked everyone to connect with us on Facebook and help our numbers grow. You may reach Miranda at miranda@osceolacountyfair.com Of special note at this year’s meeting was the Florida YPI Service

Project, with proceeds going to the St. Augustine Youth Services. Con- grats to Miranda and her group, as they raised over $4,000. All of you Zone 2 folks had a part in this, as your Zone 2 contributed $1,000 to the Florida YPI group for this cause. Vicki Chouris, Zone 2 Membership Chair gave a report and shared all

the exciting news about this year’s Coca-Cola sponsored membership drive. The challenge is on to sign up all Zone 2 fairs as IAFE members. The benefits are many and the rewards offered by Coca-Cola are big! Contact Vicki Chouris at vicki@southfloridafair.com to be a part of this campaign. Thank you Vicki! It’s not too early to mark your calendars for this year’s IAFE conven- tion in Las Vegas, November 27-30. And – while you are planning –

don’t forget the exciting move for our IAFE Convention in 2018. We’ll be in San Antonio. Please be on the lookout for the next Zone 2 Newsletter in June. If you

have a new program, an exciting event or some great photos to share, send them my way. I am always available via email (nancys@scstatefair.org) or phone (803 -518-6703). All comments are welcome. While in the beautiful city of St. Augustine, I was fortunate to have a

bit of time for my favorite thing (other than fairs of course!) – Bird- watching. The photo included is that of a Roseate Spoonbill. I could not help but notice, after viewing him in all his beauty, that I captured his shadow along with his brilliant “roseate” reflection in the wa- ter. Fairs are much like that. We leave a “shadow,” an impression, on many lives. We also should be a reflection of the communities we serve. A roseate spoonbill and a fair – both bring beauty and leave lasting impressions wherever they go! What an awe- some opportunity is ours.

Keep up the good work and keep working together!
