“Just Chillin’ A little History...& More Upbeat June and a Smiling Moon!

Sonoma County, CA. ~ Midsum- mer June means summer solstice. Ah, June! A month charged with a sense of freedom and new begin- nings. Do you too recall that burst of glee on the last day of school when summer arrived? Giddy little kids in our NYC playground ran around in wild circles chanting: “No more teachers, no more books! No more teachers’ dirty looks!” And, on hot sum- mer days, we could look forward to a whole central pond-like area that had reliable

sprinklers that

sprayed us with icy cold water— “to beat the New York heat!” Many of us recall grinning at

later solemn, formal June gradua- tions feeling still that similar rum- ble of freedom within plus the joy of at last finishing yet another seg- ment of our education. An endless hit parade of pop

songs deal with “Honeymoon— keep on shining in June” for June brides and wedding wishes. Maybe some of the composers saw Valley of the Moon night skies? A huge number of uniquely tal-

ented, highly creative folks have June birthdays.

Among my fa-

vorites are Morgan Freeman, a fine actor with such a distinctive baritone voice, born June 1, 1937 in Memphis, TN.

Both Natalie

Portman and Johnny Depp have a June 9th birthday—very talented Natalie 1981 Jerusalem, Israel. Quirky actor Depp in 1963, Ow- ensboro, Kentucky. Multi-talented Neil Patrick Harris celebrates his June 15, 1973~Albuquerque, NM while Paul McCartney has his 74th on June 18th remembering Liver- pool, England. Meryl Streep will blow out candles on June 22, 1949 recollecting Summit, New Jersey. Special kudos to Maestro James Levine, the superb conductor, born June 23, 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio. A child prodigy, who stud- ied at Juilliard in NYC, he joined the Met Opera in 1971 and became their Music Director in 1976. A grand career lived internationally.

We send Maestro Levine heartiest best wishes and grateful thanks for bringing the finest opera performances to a wider public

for more than

four decades. Ill health caused his retirement this year. As the great lyric says:

But, if you have a musical fam- ily member who happens to love Scottish Fiddling and dancing, and would like to attend a sum- mer camp like no other –this year August 26th through Sept 3rd- -consider con- tacting Cornelia Van Aken 707- 537-8677 who can tell you all about the Val- ley of the Moon Scottish Fid- dling School!

“thrill sequences” actually showed him doing his own crazy stunts. Many do not know that while he completed a publicity picture for Roach studios in 1919 a grisly mis- take happened when a “prop” he held was a true bomb. He lost two fingers on his right hand. Hard to fathom that this constantly cheer- ful, optimistic comic actor went

on to make 12 feature films (com- pared to Charlie Chaplin’s four during the 1920s)--including the oſten shown scene when Lloyd hangs with his hands from a town clock-face high above the street in “Safety Last” 1923. My favor- ite Lloyd film is “Speedy” with its wild, incomparable chases and
