Sonoma County, CA. ~ On June 7, 2016, Sonoma County Library launches its “Read— For the Win” summer reading program for kids, “TeenRead” summer reading program for teens and “Library Bingo Chal- lenge” summer reading pro- gram for adults. Children, teens and adults who participate in fun and free activities available at all Sonoma County Library branches in June and July can win prizes for reaching their reading goals. “We’re excited to invite all residents across the county to join our community of readers in Sonoma County,” said Jennifer Duran, Branch Manager of the Rincon Val- ley Library. “We’ve planned a wonderful program for kids, teens, and adults to make the library a great place to read, learn,
and discover what’s
available for their enjoyment.” Themed children’s events include a week-long Olympic- style torch relay and visits from renowned local author Jona- than London, whose “Froggy” character is highlighted in this year’s collaborative
theme,
along with cultural events and activities
that celebrate read-
ing, getting outdoors and ex- ercising. Teen workshops have been developed with the goal of imparting skills and experi- ences that youth will find use- ful, including quilting, fine arts, and learning to play ukulele. Adult events highlight local musicians, a favorite pastime around the county. There’s also a scientifically
proven benefit to summer read- ing. Research has shown that
“Tere is only one thing in the world worse than being
talked about, and that is not being
talked about.” Oscar Wilde

Annual SUMMER Guide #1
Sonoma County Library’s 2016 Summer Reading Programs
reading over the summer pre- vents summer reading
loss.
“Studies indicate that students who read recreationally out- perform those who don’t. Stu- dents read more when they can choose materials
based
on their own interests,” Kathy DeWeese, Coordinator of Chil- dren’s Services added. “Our libraries are committed to sup- porting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families, and we love taking the opportunity to make it fun, too.”
Summer reading events are
listed on the Sonoma County Library website event calendar for June (
http://sclib.us/2A) and for July (http://sclib. us/2B). For more information about children’s and teen sum- mer reading programs, please contact Kathy DeWeese at 545- 0831 x1513 or kdeweese@so-
