Trois-Rivières newsprint line conversion to include ABB drives

at Kruger’s Trois-Rivières mill in Quebec, Canada is being converted to produce linerboard. On completion of the
conversion PM10 will have yearly capacity for 360,000 tonnes of 100 per cent recycled lightweight linerboard for use in Kruger’s box plants and for the global packaging market. ABB will provide and install
drive systems for the paper making machine and its winder, including ACS880 MultiDrive Line ups, AC motors, System 800xA control system, supervisory systems, remote diagnostic services, high-speed data logging system, spare parts and local engineering, commissioning, installation supervision and start- up service. Kruger Packaging opted for the latest state-of-the-art AC drive
rive systems are to be supplied and installed by ABB as part of the $250 million
system, which will replace the existing DC drive system. “We have chosen ABB for
their excellent engineering and service team, as well as their extensive knowledge and experience in delivering proven technology for a number of our projects,” said Christian Lemay,
Kruger Project Manager. ABB’s ACS880 Drive technology,
coupled with ABB’s Direct Torque Control (DTC) technology, is said to provide unsurpassed motor control performance, supported with best in class uptimes. “The ABB project delivery and engineering team has a strong,
trusted relationship and great working history with Kruger,” said Jim Fisher, Head of ABB’s Pulp & Paper business. “We look forward to delivery of yet another successful project which will produce energy efficiencies and reduced maintenance costs for Kruger.”
New washing plant for La Cellulose Du Pin pulp mill
Smurfit Kappa’s La Cellulose Du Pin pulp and paper mill at Biganos near Bordeaux in France has ordered a new screening and brown stock washing plant from Valmet for kraft liner pulp production. The new plant will replace old

equipment and enable the mill to meet modern environmental requirements. The delivery is scheduled for the beginning of 2017, and the start-up for later that year. “Valmet has proven
technology for high kappa pulp production, based on a unique
cooking, refining and washing concept. This order is a token of our leading position within the area of fibre lines for kraft liner. We are looking forward to an interesting project together with Smurfit Kappa,” says Peter Rummel, sales manager at Valmet.
The order includes a new
screening plant with a reject refiner and a washing stage consisting of a filter stage followed by two TwinRoll presses. The screening and brown stock washing plant will have a capacity of 1,250 air- dried tons per day.
