Iggesund starts up rebuilt Workington paperboard machine

A

paperboard machine rebuilt by Andritz at Iggesund’s Workington mill in

the UK has been successfully started up. Its new press section has

increased capacity by about 10 percent to 220,000 tons and while improving product quality and runnability has cut energy consumption by 10 percent. “Looking back, this was a super job by both our own staff and the contractors involved,” says Ulf Löfgren, managing director of the Workington mill. “They worked day and night to give us the best possible results.” Andritz provided basic and

detailed engineering, including a complete new press section with three presses: a jumbo press (LNP) with large-diameter rolls, a PrimePress X shoe press in the second nip, as well as

a smoothing press. The new PrimeFeeder for ropeless tail threading from press section to

dryer section is a state-of-the-art vacuum tail threading system that reduces the time taken

and makes the process safer for the operators due to its remote control function.

Finnpulp applies for an environmental permit

Progress towards the construction of what is expected to be the world’s largest softwood pulp mill has been made with the submission by Finnpulp of the environmental and water permit application to the Regional State Administrative Agency of Eastern Finland.

The €1.4 billion bio-production mill is being planned for a site at Sorsasalo, Kuopio and will have annual capacity to produce 1.2 million tons of pulp. The environmental and water permit application is based on

May/June 2016

the information gained from the environmental impact assessment process that was completed in December and a number of additional studies performed in early 2016. The bioproduction facility

consists of sulphate pulp mill, a bark-drying and gasification unit, a power plant and a wastewater treatment plant. The wastewater treatment plant will also be used to treat wastewaters from the Savon Sellu Oy fluting mill and the leachate from Ekokem-Palvelu Oy. During the project, environmental permit

applications for a biogas facility and a biocoal facility will also be submitted. The permit application concerns activities and emissions during operation. A permit application in compliance with the Water Act for taking water for the facility from Virtasalmi in Kallavesi, placing and building the water collection and discharge pipes in Kallavesi and filling a water area will also be submitted simultaneously. Finnpulp estimates that the

permit procedure by authorities will be completed and the permit decision published before

autumn this year. The environmental permit application will be subjected to public consultation by the Regional State Administrative Agency of Eastern Finland. The bio-production facility will

create 1,500 jobs in North Savo and 3,400 in the national value chain.

In addition to its pulp capacity,

the facility will use 6.7 million cubic metres of raw wood material a year produce 60,000 tons of tall oil and one terawatt hour (TWh) of bioelectricity for the national electricity grid.
