Commercial start up for Canada’s first lignin plant
A
bio-based chemical industry based on lignin could be built up following
the commercial start-up of Canada’s first commercial-scale
extraction plant. The plant to extract the chemical – a natural by-product of the wood pulping process – has been built by West Fraser at its pulp mill in Hinton, Alberta.
West Fraser, a diversified
forest products company with operations across western Canada, has built the state-of- the art facility to recover lignin from the pulping operation
using a novel technology, started production of lignin in March. It was made possible by joint funding from industry and government. Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions
