Facial surgery is now amongst the most popular cosmetic surgery in Britain with 20,000 UK patients opting for facelifts, eyelid surgery and nose surgery last year. We spoke to consultant cosmetic surgeon Anne Dancey from Spire Little Aston Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, for her take on the rise in popularity of facial surgery.
“The reality is that facial surgery has gone from being a taboo subject to something that is readily accepted. Most of my patients are in their 30s and 40s wanting to hold back the ageing process for as long as possible”, said Anne.
Interestingly, facial surgery for men also rose in popularity. Face and necklifts climbed 14% since 2014; whilst brow lifts, eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty (nose surgery) all gained huge popularity. Surgeons link this with many men opting to revert to a clean shaven look, after the popular bushy beard trend from last year fell out of favour.
Non-surgical procedures Some of the most dramatic rises in popularity of face and neck procedures could be linked to the fact that despite the vast array of non-surgical treatments available for these areas, the public are realising they have limited effect when compared to traditional surgery.
Anne said: “Anti-wrinkle treatments can be useful for most patients- they are simple to do, with minimal recovery time. However, they only work for a limited time and need repeating to maintain the result. After several years they may work out more costly than surgery”.
The future is… What trends in facial surgery can we expect in the forthcoming year? “Fat grafting is probably the most exciting development”, says Anne. “We can remove fat from an area where it is not wanted, such as the tummy or thighs, and inject it into wrinkles, cheeks and lips to replace the missing volume and rejuvenate the skin by bringing in a new blood supply. Over time we see the skin actually looks younger without any further treatment”.
