CD PICK’S OF THE MONTH: MAY 2016 THIS MONTH'S FAB FOUR…
BONNIE RAITT – DIG IN DEEP (REDWING)
Bonnie Lynn Raitt was born on November 8th 1949 in Burbank, California, daughter of Broadway musical star John Raitt. She released her first album in 1971 and has recorded around two dozen in all now - and I have them all! This latest release, Dig In Deep, is another stunningly good collection of tracks, showing off her wonderful voice plus displaying her skills as one of the world's leading exponents of the slide guitar. As always, she is backed superbly by her excellent backing group.
There are so many great new songs to enjoy here, including Need You Tonight; All Alone With Something To Say; What You're Doing To Me; Undone; and The Comin’ Round Is Going Through. However, she saves the best until last with the killer closing track, the mournful and emotional The Ones We Couldn't Be, which is pretty much guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye.
Bonnie Raitt and her band will be playing at the splendid Birmingham Symphony Hall on May 11th – see you there!
THE REAL COUNTRY COLLECTION (LEGACY) This budget priced 3-CD boxset, totalling 47 tracks in all, contains some of the best country records ever made. Country and Western music is not everybody's cup of tea, but there have been some absolute classic songs written and recorded over the years and many of them are right here, including the Johnny Cash anthem I Walk The Line; Jim Reeves’ 1960 chart hit, He'll Have To Go; Skeeter Davis' tear-jerking The End Of The World; and Tammy Wynette's 1975 UK chart topper, Stand By Your Man.
Other favourites of mine include Blue Moon Of Kentucky by Elvis Presley; Flowers On The Wall by the Statler Brothers; Jolene by Dolly Parton; Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan; Always On My Mind by Willie Nelson; and the maudlin He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones.
THE GO-GO’S – BEAUTY AND THE BEAT – DELUXE 2-CD EDITION (EDSEL)
The Go-Go's formed in 1978 in the midst of Los Angeles’ thriving punk scene. The line-up eventually settled in 1980 with the talents of Belinda Carlisle on lead vocals, Charlotte Caffey on guitars, keyboards and vocals, Jane Weidlin on guitars and vocals, Kathy Valentine on bass and vocals and Gina Schock on drums and percussion.
Signed to Miles Copeland's IRS label, this debut album was released in the summer of 1981, topped the American Billboard charts and sold over two million copies. It includes the hits, Our Lips Are Sealed, Automatic and We Got The Beat.
CD one includes the original album, plus bonus tracks of rehearsal performances, B-sides and demos. CD two is a full-length concert recorded in Boston in August 1981
BOB DYLAN – 1965-1966 – THE BEST OF THE CUTTING EDGE (COLOMBIA)
I cannot imagine the amount of Bob Dylan recordings there are out there available to buy or download. This double CD compilation is actually prefixed The Bootleg Series - Volume 12! This period of Dylan's long, prolific and successful career , 1965 and 1966, catches him in his early days and many would argue, at his most productive prime. Here you will find alternative versions of such Bob Dylan classic compositions as She Belongs To Me; Subterranean Homesick Blues; If You Gotta Go Go Now; Mr Tambourine Man; Like A Rolling Stone; Just Like A Woman; Positively 4th Street; and Highway 61 Revisited.
