“The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a

passing shape, from a spider’s web.” —Pablo Picasso

Artistic expression in its many forms is a favorite topic and the experience of it is something I enjoy exploring immensely. The thing that makes the execution of a piece of music, the placement of paint on a canvass, the strike of a sculptor’s chisel or the arc of a dancer’s limb... Into something beautiful? Where does that magic come from? If you’ve ever witnessed that moment, be it facing a stage, in a museum, or savoring a well-prepared morsel of food, you know when “it” has happened. That moment that steals you away from your day-to-day world and shuttles you off to that place where inspiration lives. It’s a glorious moment to experience and one to be savored. Fortunately, inspiration is all around us. We are blessed with a vast collection of world-class museums, performance spaces and every kind of art modality imaginable here in Southern California. Places that allow one to disappear for a moment or two into the artistry of a composer, chef, dancer, actor or musician. Los Angeles alone has more than 100 museums to choose from, with a myriad of options between there and San Diego’s more than 90 options. It’s enough to keep one busy for

years... I won’t even try to discuss the number of performance venues available. Needless to say, there are thousands to choose from... And, each one of them matters. They are the places to explore and learn about our place in the timeline of history, every paint- ing, sculpture, recording and performance is a window into the moments they represent when created. They show us the pain, the passions, the struggles and triumphs of the instants they record with incredible clarity, especially when you take the time to know them. Picasso’s Guernica and horrors of war, Monet’s paintings of ballerinas expressing the joy of movement, the earthy sound of Billie Holiday’s voice as she expresses the sorrows of racism in “Strange Fruit” or the incongruity of wealth in the meticulous stitching of a hand-embroidered, guilded broacade—it’s all there to see, touch and hear—and to learn from. The best thing about living well, is that you are able to participate in life’s many joyful exercises. The trick? Making sure to get out and find them.
