brilliant. What, if anything, has surprised you most about that aspect so far? I like the fact that Kenny is so comfortable with his sexuality, it
doesn’t get in the way of his faith. He’s a deeply religious person and has a relationship with God. As silly as the portrayal of his talks with Jesus may be, I love that he can have that relationship and be an out gay person. I think it’s important for queer Christian kids to see that and to know that it’s okay to be both religious and different. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Have you noticed a difference in reaction to the show so far, between younger audiences vs. older? Young people have said, “Thank God there is a character on TV
that I can relate to.” Older people say, “I wish I had a character on TV I could relate to when I was young and struggling.” What’s your favorite part about Kenny and the role? Kenny’s fantasy sequences are my favorite. I like that you are so
clued into his internal life, his fears, fantasies and his dilemmas. It’s a beautiful thing. I think every teen, but especially queer ones, have extreme fantasy lives and it’s a cool thing to get to portray that on a network television show. Who wouldn’t want to rollerskate down a hallway in bedazzled light up skates? How’s California treating you this time around? It’s lovely. The weather is delightful and I enjoy the driving. I find it almost meditative.
Here’s hopingThe Real O’Neals sticks around long enough for Noah to teach Kenny how to navigate the L.A. freeway system...
