Advice on how to recruit, train and retain staff. E
mployment is an issue raised time and again at our meetings and Business Clubs: how do we get the staff we need
and once we’ve got them how do we best train and retain them? With the number of unemployed people reducing on a regular basis we have to appreciate that businesses are having to work harder to find the right person for the job. But are they? A colleague who is currently changing
occupation recently attended two interviews. On both occasions the interviewer was younger than her, was nervous and had received little or no training as to how to interview a potential employee. Before the interview process begins you need to have a recruitment plan that clearly identifies what you are offering and what you want in return. What are the benefits of working for your business and why should that candidate desperately want to work for you? Businesses have to prove their worthiness as much as any potential employees! Once you’ve agreed your recruitment
plan and budget what next? If looking for a qualified role it can be worth researching specific related publications or an employment agency. But before you spend all your hard earned money make sure you do your homework: find out how many people will see
your advert, what success other employers have had in the past and ask for a contact to obtain a reference – and don’t forget to ask for a discount if you’re looking for multiple adverts/staff. Local publications can be more cost
effective with a large print run and, as they are directed at the immediate area, you could find your perfect candidate on your doorstep. Alternately you can advertise via your social media connections. This is a more ‘hit or miss’ method but it’s free and you can post new adverts as little or often as you want. Another free option is Jobcentre Plus Devon
Cornwall and Somerset. You can advertise with them via their Universal Jobmatch service – see
https://www.gov.uk/browse/employing- people. One positive difference between Jobcentre and other options is that you can offer a voluntary work experience placement of up to 8 weeks to a person who is already unemployed. You are not expected to offer a job following the placement; however, there would be no barriers if you wanted to do so. You can also arrange a work trial to give you the opportunity to get to know the person prior to offering a position.
