It’s all happening at The Winking Prawn in Salcombe F
or anyone who knows and loves Salcombe, the iconic beach café The Winking Prawn at North Sands is a much-
loved destination for anyone with a passion for wonderful food and spectacular views. Known for its quirky character
as well as its awe-inspiring beachside location, not to mention the dressing up box that’s frequented by young (and less young) customers, the local brand has been working hard and growing its family of destinations in recent years, and in 2016 it’s taking its service to new heights with an increased online presence, updated website and increased opening hours for the summer season. The new website launching this month is the cherry on top after the family run business launched The Cracking Crab beachside restaurant in Polzeath last year, preceded by Sailor V on Fore Street in Salcombe and the Island Street Bar and Grill, also in Salcombe. Each venue has its own distinct
character, with Sailor V being the masters of a good cup of coffee, slice of cake, perfect smoothies and a seriously good lunch – if you haven’t tried their gourmet hot dogs you’ve been missing out! Remember it’s dog friendly and perfect for afternoon pick-me-ups, not to mention an atmospheric but laid back evening meal in the summer months. Meanwhile the Island Street Bar and Grill
is all about good vibes, a relaxed atmosphere and lots of fun late into the evening. They
are famous for their half price burger club on Wednesdays (we’re talking everything from The Italian Job filled with mozzarella and pesto, the Smokey Joe crammed with smoky back bacon and Devon Red Cheese and even the seemingly simple cheddar and onion burger which puts a little twist between those buns with caramelised onions thrown in for good measure. Cocktails are a colourful and extensive part of the menu and on Friday evenings there’s a regular 2-4-1 offer to celebrate the start of the weekend before live music ‘till late on Saturday nights. The newest addition
to the collection, The Cracking Crab takes you to surfer’s paradise Polzeath in Cornwall for everything from breakfast by the beach to evening meals in the sun and an already renowned Sunday roast each week. Served from midday until 4, we’re talking homemade taste but without the washing up; it’s something we’re becoming kinda
famous for, and it’s particularly tasty after a bracing spring surf for those who are up for it. Don’t forget to book though; good news travels fast! Of course, The Winking
Prawn will continue to do what it does best, but with longer hours from Easter. Open for breakfast,
lunch and dinner as well as hot cross buns and tea after the sunrise beach service on Easter Sunday at North Sands, it’s a haven for ice creams and happy faces by the beach. We can’t wait for their summer barbeques to start when the sun comes out this summer!
