An impressive group of trainers and mustang mares were featured at the 2016 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, January 22-23. Twenty, invited trainers from Cali- fornia, Idaho, Wyoming, Virginia and many other states accumulated in Cowtown to show off the skills of their 120-day, gentled mustangs.
After four preliminary classes includ- ing, handling and conditioning, mustang ma- neuvers, trail and compulsory maneuvers, re- turning champion Ginger Duke led the field with total of 238 points. Ginger was paired with a tall buckskin mare gathered from the Calico Mountains of Nevada named, Been There Dun That. Wylene Wilson-Davis was a close second behind Duke riding Steel My Heart, a 5-year-old gray mare, to 234.5 points.
The top-10 preliminary trainers moved forward to the sold-out Freestyle Finals Sat- urday evening. Special guests, Bobby Kerr and the Civil Air Patrol from Weatherford, TX, helped start the evening with the open- ing ceremony. Shelby Rosholt riding White Lightning, and Wilson-Davis moved into the finals with the highest compulsory scores of 60.5.
The freestyle finals did not disappoint!
Trainers put together a wide range of rou- tines featuring a theme from Star Wars to a performance set to Billy Ray Cyrus’ 90’s country hit, Achy Breaky Heart. Having not competed since Mustang Million in 2013, Wilson-Davis was able to win the champion- ship and was also chosen fan favorite by the attending crowd. She was awarded $3,500 for her efforts.
