The SouthWest Chat W
elcome to the March issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. It’s been a crazy month in the world of thieves. The Texas and Southwestern Cattle
Raisers Association busted up an ATV theft ring out of Sulphur Springs and several cattle rustlers are behind bars. On the horse front, over 21 horses have been stolen over the last 90 days with 9 recovered. The ma- jority of these horses are listed on
netposse.com and I’ve provided their number so that you can get addi- tional information. See our cover story starting on page 12.
As of press time, the thieves have not been appre-
hended. Please be vigilant. Lock your gates, keep your horses up close and report any suspicious activity. DO NOT give directions to someone over the phone that you don’t know. If they must come to your house to look at horses, saddles, equipment, meet them a couple miles away from your house and have them follow you.
Horse show season starts early in the south. Every-

horse show friends and catch up on what they’ve been doing during the break. You also get to see their new mounts and meet all the new faces in your class. And at the end of the day, we all have our favorite restaurants to visit. The great part at your season opener is everyone
starts at zero. You have the instant feedback of where you stand with your peers. Those that have been rid- ing all winter tend to show up prepared and confi- dent. Of course, it doesn’t matter if there was a break or not, those multi-seasoned rider/horse partnerships are tough to beat at any time. They are always an ex- ample of what level of polish and finese you should be working towards. The true measure of a successful ride is when
you evaluate your ride and realize what worked and what you haven’t quite mastered. Nothing feels bet- ter than to hit that slide and rollback that you’ve been working so hard to get correct. Horse showing is always a work in progress with
a series of small improvements each trip into the ring. I joke with my friends that all progress takes place outside the comfort zone. If this is indeed true, I must be making tons of progress! w
