HEALTHYLIFESTYLE Due to growing demand, a second time slot has been added for the Geri-Fit®

strength training and falls prevention program at the Kay Ceniceros Senior Center in Menifee. The new Monday and Wednesday 10:30-11:15 am time slot will begin on March 21. The Kay Ceniceros Senior Center has been offering the Geri-Fit program for nearly five years with the Tuesday/Thursday afternoon program being consistently

sold out. Participants who have been involved in the program since 2011 started out using 2 pound dumbbell weights but are now using up to 4 and 5-pound dumbbells for most of the exer- cises. All have seen an improve- ment in strength, stamina, and balance. “It’s great to see our senior community growing stronger and more confident,” states Francesca Fisher, owner of the company and the instruc- tor at Kay Ceniceros. Geri-Fit® is a 45-minute ev-

idence-based strength training fitness program that teaches older adults how to work out safely with a set of dumbbell weights. Each person brings their own set of dumbbells to class and they are encouraged to work out at their own pace. There is no dancing or choreography to learn and the participants never have to get on the floor. The Geri-Fit program is one of 48 evidence-based programs that underwent a

review process by the National Council on Aging and the Administration on Aging in 2012. Geri-Fit was found to have met the highest criteria as a disease prevention and health promotion program and was approved for federal funding under the Older Americans Act. Senior centers and non-profits that want to get licensed to offer the Geri-Fit program at their facilities can apply for these Title III-D grant funds for any of the 48 approved programs, including Geri-Fit®. The Geri-Fit program benefits those that have a difficult time getting out of a

chair, low couch, or car. Body weight exercises such as squats and lunges work the lower half of the body and rebuild strength that’s been lost in the hips, thighs and legs. “Unbeknownst to many senior adults is the fact that we lose one pound of muscle each year past the age of 50,” states Fisher. “For someone that is 80-years- old, if they haven’t done any type of strength training, they’ve lost 30 pounds of pre- cious muscle over the last 30 years.” Walking is not enough. Regular resistance training is the key to living a fuller

and more productive life well into the golden years. The Geri-Fit program helps re- build this lost muscle and strength which brings about greater independence and improved functional capacity. “We have adults enrolled in our program as early as their late 50’s and as high as 100. But, the age group we see the most are those in their mid-70’s and 80’s.

It’s

great to see their independence improve and they are delighted with the results the program brings,” she adds. In addition to the group classes,

the company also offers private, one-on-one personal fitness train- ing at clients’ homes, gyms, and re- tirement communities.

Group

classes are available in Menifee, Temecula, Murrieta, Hemet, Win- chester, San Jacinto, Laguna Niguel, Tustin, Fountain Valley, La Mesa, Valley Center and Vista. Course fees are $48 per person for an 8-class term and are FREE to those over the age of 65 with cer- tain “Silver” Medicare plans.
