Kruger converts line from newsprint to liner board

Canada’s Kruger Packaging, a leading paperboard producer in North America, will have the newsprint PM10 paper machine at the Trois-Rivières mill in Quebec modernised by Valmet to produce lightweight linerboard. When the machine starts up in 2017 it will have capacity to produce 360,000 tonnes of linerboard a year from 100 per cent recycled material, some of which will be sold to Kruger Packaging’s box plants in LaSalle (Quebec) and Brampton (Ontario), while the remainder will be sold on the market. Kruger said the modernization

A

project will generate significant growth opportunities for the Trois-Rivières facility, contributing to secure operations and the mill’s 270 jobs. The project has received $190 million in support from the Quebec government, which includes an $84-million loan to finance the cost of the

s part of a C$250 million investment project first announced last September,

conversion and a $106-million participation, through Investissement Quebec, in a new company that now combines all of Kruger’s Containerboard and Packaging activities. As a result of this investment, the Quebec government will have a 25 per cent ownership in the new company which has assets of more

than $600 million, and more than 800 jobs including 620 in Quebec, will be secured. The Trois-Rivières mill will

continue to produce newsprint on PM10 until two months before the end of the conversion project. Meanwhile, the mill’s other newsprint production line, PM7, will remain in operation into the

future. Overall, Kruger’s three newsprint production facilities will have an annual output of 600,000 tonnes, maintaining the company’s ranking among North America’s top newsprint manufacturers. “Kruger selected Valmet based on its innovative technology and track record of successful rebuilds, as well as their knowledge of North American recycled linerboard requirements,” said Christian Lemay, project manager of Kruger Packaging. Valmet said the 8.4m wire- width machine will be fully modernized from headbox to winder to produce linerboard with industry-leading high strength to basis weight properties, and with sheet formation and surface characteristics suitable for high-quality graphic printing for corrugated box plants. The delivery will include Valmet DNA automation system with remote servicing capabilities for machine and process control as well as MD/CD controls, along with a Pulp Analyzer.

Brown sack kraft paper machine modernised by Mondi

Mondi has completed the modernisation of its PM5 brown sack kraft paper machine at its Štĕtí mill in Czech Republic. The machinery update included the installation of a new press section which significantly increases paper dryness and paper strength properties, leading to reduced sheet breaks and higher

runnability. Together with the press section,

the vapour hood was renewed and a new direct drive system was installed. This modern drive system results in higher efficiency due to the elimination of the entire dryer section gearboxes and gear wheels. Roman Senecky, managing

director of Mondi Štĕtí, explained why the machine was upgraded: “The aim of the modernisation was to reduce energy consumption and improve paper web runnability. During the ramp-up phase, the machine has already demonstrated its new potential.”
