Global packaging growth will be driven by Asian markets
A
sia will drive growth in global demand for packaging, with sales increasing at 3.5 per
cent per year up to 2020, says Smithers Pira in its latest report. In a study that covers the
packaging industry in 17 major and 33 smaller markets, the report – The Future of Global Packaging to 2020 – covers current market sizes, market and technology trends and forecast demand over the next five years. The market for global packaging
was valued at US$812 billion in 2014, with an annual growth rate of 4.2 per cent over the period 2010-14. The industry is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 3.5 per
cent over the period 2015-20, and is expected to then reach almost $1,000 billion at today’s prices. This forecast growth is expected to be driven by Asia and stronger growth in regions that have struggled in recent years, particularly Western and Eastern Europe. Co-author of the report Paul
Boyce said: “Following the financial crisis of 2008/09 that caused a significant decline in global sales of packaging, the market has picked up somewhat in recent years, although it does face continued challenges. “Continued urbanisation, growth
in cost per package, sustainability and the growth in the consumer
class in emerging markets are all factors that are forecast to drive value growth.” Asia accounted for the largest
share of the packaging market in 2014, followed by North America and Western Europe. Growth in packaging consumption has remained positive and reliably strong for the Asian region and there is still much potential for growth as the consumer class becomes more fully realised and consumption of cosmetics and other fast moving consumer goods – as well as healthcare – grows. Flexible plastics packaging was
the fastest growing market globally in 2014, followed by rigid plastics
packaging and board packaging. Looking ahead, flexible plastics packaging is predicted to continue as the fastest-growing packaging category. Sustainability issues have enhanced the focus and presence of lightweighting upon the industry. It has become a common trend for packaging converters to reduce the weight of their products to reduce costs associated with shipping, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and to help create a more sustainable supply chain. The Future of Global Packaging
to 2020 is available for £4,200. More information from www.

IMI TH Jansen to supply Valmet after audit
Germany-based IMI TH Jansen, part of flow control specilaist IMI Critical Engineering, is celebrating becoming an official supplier to Valmet, the leading developer and supplier of services and technologies for the pulp, paper and energy industries. A team from Valmet Corporation
spent two days at the IMI TH Jansen facility in Sankt Ingbert in Germany’s Saarland region to assess the company as an official
supplier of double eccentric valves in DN1800 size for a gas-fired boiler for a blast furnace. The audit covered a number of
areas, including production, quality and management. Another key focus was health & safety – an area where IMI TH Jansen has devoted significant resources recently.. The Valmet team were also impressed by IMI TH Jansen’s lean management structure and systems to ensure
traceability of materials in the supply chain and production process. Andreas Zarfass, managing director of IMI TH Jansen, explained: “Valmet is the global leader in its sector and is naturally cautious about appointing new suppliers, with rigorous systems in place to vet potential additions to its supply chain. “The audit carried out by
Valmet was extremely thorough, encompassing all aspects of our
operations, and to have come through it – and to have guaranteed orders in place as a result – is a real coup for us. It’s a tribute to the dedication and attitude of the team at Sankt Ingbert, and the backing we received from the wider IMI Critical Engineering business. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with Valmet.” More information from

Comment period for PCR modules extended
The public comment period for the Draft Product Category Rule (PCR) modules for Roundwood and Pulp/Paper has been extended to 2 March 2016 by SCS Global Services (SCS), a specialist in third- party environmental certification and standards development.
January/February 2016
SCS is the Program Operator of the PCR development, which is being organized by the Environmental Paper Network North America (EPN). Announced in September 2015, these are the first PCR modules for roundwood and pulp/paper
to allow for the development of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that cover a comprehensive set of environmental and health impact categories. “A number of stakeholders
expressed interest in the PCR, and asked for more time to comment,” said Tobias Schultz, chair of the PCR Working Group. “To let everyone have plenty of time to provide feedback, we decided to extend the public comment period by 30 days.”
