Energy saving and drying efficiencies start with ABC

By keeping a paper machine’s air system well balanced with the correct drying strategies, reductions in energy consumption of more than €100,000/year are possible, says Paolo Della Negra

air system parameters and settings. However, the question poses itself, how are these settings maintained in the real life world? Lack of competence or inadequate understanding of the impact of incorrect settings can easily nullify the initial benefits. Even varying machine operating

conditions, such as changes in production or the use of heat exchangers for the hall ventilation depending on the time of the year, can cause uncontrolled changes on the air system balance, moving away from the optimum operating point.

As easy as ABC The Advantage BalanceControl (ABC) has been developed by Valmet with the aim of solving

t has been repeatedly shown that a paper making system’s efficiency can be improved by measuring and adjusting the

this problem. The ABC system enables the mill to maintain – automatically – the optimum settings of the air system, such as balance and exhaust humidity level, as well as to select the best drying parameters in the choice between temperature and

impingement speed. By means of a personalised

algorithm and a set of sensors installed on the hood and air system key points, the ABC system constantly detects and adjusts the drying parameters and the air system flow characteristics (air

temperature, pressure, volume flow and humidity values) to maintain the lowest specific consumption required for the drying. Installation includes a control panel, along with on-field sensors, connected to the mill DCS and QCS through a bus system. The system can be accessed both

from the local net and through a safe VPN connection. It is then possible to access the ABC pages through any internet connection and from a simple web browser. Every 15 seconds, the system collects and calculates about one hundred variables which are then stored and can be used for recurring reports to be distributed to the different control levels within the tissue mill. In Valmet’s experience, the ABC

system works so that all actions implemented by the service
