HOPE'S CAFE FEEDS COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Whether it’s Persian dancing, guitar lessons, barista training, or community gardening, there’s always something good happening at Hope’s Café.

A product of the Spire Community partnership between Uniting Communities and the Clayton Wesley Uniting Church, the café offers assistance for asylum seekers, English classes, arts and crafts activities, an op shop and much more.

Everyone is welcome at Hope’s Café, where the vibrant atmosphere makes it a great place for a coffee and a chat. Every Friday, over 100 meals are served on a ‘donate what

you can’ basis. It’s a great way to enjoy a delicious, healthy and affordable meal, and get to know other people in the community.

The café’s thriving community garden is tended by local residents and Uniting Communities’ clients, and is packed full of tomatoes, zucchinis, eggplants, mint, corn and other healthy produce.

The popular craft group has also been busy with Persian embroidery, Chinese paper flower-making and a major quilting project.

A major highlight of the year was the Persian New Year celebrations in March, which featured traditional fire jumping, Persian dancing

and hundreds of people enjoying themselves to the hilt. Persian cooking classes have also been a big hit, raising much-needed funds for Christmas hampers.

The café also hosted a ‘Tooth Party’ earlier in the year, which raised money for a dental program for people who are not eligible for the SA Dental Scheme.

Most importantly, Hope’s Café has been incredibly enriched by our wonderful volunteers, many of whom initially came to the café as customers. Their time, effort, and hard work are what enables Hope’s Café to help people to come together and forge a better and more-inclusive community.
