Getting long in the tooth

A common phrase associated with getting older... in these days, with people keeping their teeth for longer, a new set of challenges are becoming evident. There are many causes for apparent changes in the appearance of the teeth, these may include gum recession, excessive tooth wear or gum problems, and getting older does not mean these things inevitably have to follow.

Recession Recession can be caused by brushing too hard, particularly with manual brush, as it is very easy to scrub away at the teeth. The corners of the mouth are especially prone to recession with the canines or premolars being commonly affected. However, recession can occur anywhere in the mouth and at any age. Careful brushing with a light fingertip pressure can help to avoid the worst of these problems. Also, the use of an electric toothbrush can help, as excess pressure tends to cause the brush to stall or slow down and its action often helps to stimulate the gums. Excessive tooth wear Excessive tooth wear can be caused by a variety of reasons. These include chemicals, e.g. acids in fizzy drinks or fruit

juices, abrasion due to heavy brushing, attrition due to the action of the opposing teeth or restorations and abfraction, or the flexing of the teeth due to heavy biting forces, can also contribute. Each of these problems need to be carefully diagnosed and the causative agent or habit identified. Treatment will vary depending on the problem, but will involve addressing the root cause of the problem (if you can excuse the pun). The teeth can then be restored as appropriate and preventative measures put in place to avoid further problems. Gum disease One of the most prevalent diseases, with up to 50 per cent of adults and 60 per cent of those aged 65 years & over suffering from periodontitis. It can vary from mild gingivitis with inflammation and bleeding of the gums to advanced periodontitis with excessive bone loss, leading to consequent tooth loss. It is caused by plaque collecting around the gum margins but its progression is dependent on a numerous factors. However, it does not mean that it has to inexorably conclude with the loss of teeth, early diagnosis is the key. Treatment varies from the simple to more complex but is a combination of working with patients to improve oral hygiene in the areas involved and professional treatments including the application of antibacterial gels aimed at reducing harmful bacteria affecting the gums.
