CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Each year a new chairman comes on board with the hope of making a positive impact on Maryland Motor Truck Association and the trucking industry during his/her year in office. One of my beliefs in running a business is that, to have a positive impact and be successful, you have to communicate effectively to people throughout the organization. As I become the 74th MMTA Chairman of the Board I hope to utilize this page as a way to communicate to the entire membership what the Association is working towards and accomplishing.
Of key importance to me is increasing the appreciation of our industry among our elected officials in Annapolis. Last year’s elections resulted in an enormous turnover of senators and delegates, with over 70 new legislators taking office in January 2015. We also have the rare circumstance where Governor Hogan’s election has resulted in a true two-party government in the state. This presents a unique educational opportunity to reach out to these new legislators and familiarize them early in their political careers with the trucking industry. We have a chance to teach them about our economic importance, strong job creation, and outstanding safety record. We want these representatives to become more aware of how their votes impact our businesses and, ultimately, the entire state that depends on us to move the goods that citizens need.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS ENTERING OUR
If you ask any trucking company what its top three needs are today, you are likely to hear the same response—drivers, drivers, drivers. Several years ago MMTA created a scholarship program that gives financial assistance to students entering our industry as drivers or diesel technicians. To date we have donated over $50,000. However, with the demand for drivers and mechanics at an all-time high, we need to substantially grow that program. For that reason MMTA will be exploring the creation of a 501(c)3 foundation that could provide new scholarship opportunities in the future. Companies could make contributions that are tax deductible, which I hope will further encourage donations from both members and from companies that rely heavily on truck transportation to move their goods.
