MARYLAND ON THE MOVE 2015 Annual Conference takes place at Turf Valley Resort
BY SELENA GRIFFIN Managing Editor
The third year of MMTA’s “Boosting
Your Business” workshop officially replaced our typical multi-day annual management conference in 2015. Moving the event to a single afternoon and evening dinner turned out a number of new faces who his- torically could not attend a multi-day func- tion, but were now able to join us for engaging workshops and the “changing of the guard” on Thursday, Oct. 1. Despite frustrating traffic snarls, down-
pours of heavy rain, and even a possible hurricane heading our way—our members prevailed for another successful event. Important messages were delivered on this October 1st—ironically the same day many new laws took effect in Maryland—as our guest speakers impart-
ed valuable information to the various seg- ments of the trucking industry that were represented. We learned more about the expected impact of electronic logs and heard how the Maryland Department of Transportation plans to address the state’s congestion challenges and infrastructure needs. Guests also listened to a dynamic speaker who shared his cutting edge approach to increasing your business’ standing in the marketplace, and attendees became the jury for a “mock trial” imitat- ing what happens when your company gets sued after an accident. Would you be pre- pared?
Highlights of theWorkshops Included: • With FMCSA slated to release its electronic log mandate any day, Tom Cuthbertson of Omnitracs presented the
latest information on what is expected. Those carriers who are required to keep a paper log will likely have two years to convert to electronic logs once the rule is announced. Companies that have already adopted electronic logs will have an additional two years to upgrade their systems to meet the specific technological requirements in the mandate.
• MDOTDeputy Secretary JimPorts stepped in at the last minute for Secretary Pete Rahn, who was called to the Governor’s office to assist with emergency hurricane planning. Deputy Secretary Ports, who is also a former state delegate, has worked with MMTA for many years. He delivered a timely speech on recent favorable actions taken by the agency to reduce tolls, help military veterans find employment in the trucking industry, increase funding for road and bridge projects across the state, and more.
Wade Randolph and his wife Alice, Randolph Unlimited ~ Wade gave an engaging presentation on how to make your business stand out in the marketplace.
