a more Thoroughbred type. I thought I liked that type too, but now realise that I want a smaller pony which is more forward going. These days I prefer playing 15.1 hh/15.2hh ponies, no bigger, and the majority of my string is now that size.” “My favourite pony is Pixie. She is

probably one of my best but she is also the one I will always go and see. She is really fun, has a lovely character and is great to play. If I need to turn a game around I will definitely play Pixie – she never lets me down. “Although it is hard to have favourites

as polo is different to other equestrian sports – you have so many horses you cannot get too attached to them. Some stay for a time, but others move on. You never really know what a horse will be like until it joins your string. It might be as you thought or it might not be quite right.” So how is Max going to improve on

his 2015 season? “This winter I will be playing in Australia – at Ellerston – and then in Argentina. I’ll be home for Christmas – I am definitely a home

person, going away is really a struggle. When I tell others what I am up to they say ‘Wow, how exciting,’ but it’s not for me. I love being at home in Ascot. I didn’t like going away the first time and still don’t now.

So I will have a month off

and then probably a couple of trips – to Australia and back to Argentina and back to Argentina – and then it will be the summer again! Summer sees Max back in action in the

15 and 18-goal tournaments at Guards Polo Club and further afield. Max’s hard- work and skill in the saddle has earned him some great playing opportunities for the 2016 season, but not all English players are so fortunate. “It is really difficult for English players to secure a high-goal slot because the game is super competitive at this level. The Argentines dominate

and the English players

struggle to get the jobs unless they are at a lower level and can fit in as a third player. The majority of the teams are top heavy – 8/9/10-goal players plus a two- or three-goal English player.

"AN HONEST OPINION IS INVALUABLE IN THIS GAME. LIKE ANY OTHER SPORT, POLO IS COMPETITIVE AND POLITICAL SO YOU REALLY NEED SOMEONE WHOM YOU CAN TRUST BUT WHO IS DEAD HONEST WITH YOU"
