SOUTH AMERICA

The home of the modern game, South America is packed full of great grounds, amazing players and world-class ponies. We have superb links to the major clubs in both Argentina and Brazil and with their seasons dovetailing perfectly with ours at Guards Polo Club, winter is the time to be in the south. In fact, if you are watching the Abierto – the Argentine Open – you might easily think that you are actually at Smith’s Lawn as there are so many familiar faces!

LA AGUADA, OPEN DOOR, ARGENTINA This sumptuous polo estancia is home to the high-goal Novillo Astrada family. So not surprisingly it offers wonderful opportunities to play polo with some of the top players in the world on great ponies on five excellent grounds. Guards Polo Club has a long- standing relationship with La Aguada. Not only does it collaborate on our youth tournament at Coworth Park, but is also the venue for the Club’s Guards La Aguada Polo Cup, played every December. Just 45 minutes from Buenos Aires, La Aguada offers smart, fully staffed guests houses plus smaller accommodation for younger players or gap-year students. www.laaguada.com

CAMPO ARGENTINO DE POLO, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA Known as the “Cathedral of Polo”, these impressive grounds, flanked by skyscrapers, are at the heart of this great Argentine city. It is has been home to the world’s great tournament – the 40-goal Argentine Open – since 1928 and the modern history of the game is written on these fields. Thanks to our reciprocal links to this world- class polo venue, Guards members can purchase tickets to the Argentine Open (21 November – 12 December) at a discount. Email the Polo Office (polo@guardspoloclub. com) for more details. www.aapolo.com

HURLINGHAM, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA This leading Argentine polo and golf club takes its name from the London club which was once the home of polo in the UK. The Hurlingham Club, which was founded in 1888, was the first place to host polo in Argentina and continues to promote the game at the highest level to this day. With its five polo fields and stabling for more than 300 horses, plus an 18-hole golf course, 18 tennis courts (six of them grass), swimming pool and indoor sports complex, the Hurlingham is an ideal destination for any sportsman or woman, not just the polo variety. www.hurlingham-club.org.ar

HELVETIA POLO CLUB, INDAITUBA, BRAZIL The leading polo destination in the Sao Paulo region of Brazil can offer 45 immaculate polo grounds and a warm welcome in some breathtaking locations. So not surprisingly it was this club that Guards Polo Club turned to when creating its own Brazilian international event in 2014. With the amateur Brazilian players regularly playing off seven goals, the polo here is always impressive. Polo is played from March to October and guarantees great sport, but if you feel that your game needs a little boost, Helvetia also provides polo lessons at its own academy as well as other equestrian opportunities. www.helvetiapolo.com.br
