TENGOAL | Foreword

I

n June 1955 Guards Polo Club held its first polo final – for the Royal Windsor Cup. Today I write this foreword reflecting on the Club’s 60th season. Our Diamond Jubilee celebrations began in April with a magnificent reception in Windsor Castle, hosted

by our President, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. I am not sure our President and his fellow founders of the Club ever imagined in 1955 that we would be playing more than 450 games and a staggering 2,900 chukkas in a season, but this is what we achieved in 2015. One of this Club’s greatest accomplishments this season

has been the successful introduction of the two new grounds at Flemish Farm – the Castle and Cavalry Grounds – into our playing schedule. They have been favourably rated by all of our players and we look forward to playing them more next year. The two high-goal grounds at Coworth Park frequently played well throughout the summer too and we are grateful to Zoe Jenkins and the Dorchester Collection for their continued support. A highlight of this year has been the success of our

younger players in the high-goal. We have created an excellent development platform for the rising stars of the game through our youth committee. The addition of game- changing financial support from John Collins through the creation of a 10-year Talacrest Young Player of the Year Award, sees Guards Polo Club fast becoming the home of the next generation of leading players. Jack Hyde was the first recipient and he received his prize at the annual Polo Awards, which were held at Smith’s Lawn in May. None of these highlights would be possible without our

generous sponsors and Corporate Partners. Official car partner and tournament sponsor Land Rover raised the bar with prizes when presenting Kildare’s Andrew Dechet with the keys to its box at Twickenham! Earlier in the year, at the Cartier Queen’s Cup Final, we said farewell to Arnaud Bamberger, who retired as Executive Chairman of Cartier UK in August, after heading up Cartier’s tournament sponsorship here at Smith’s Lawn for more than 20 years. Meanwhile La Martina, with whom we work so closely

both at home and on our overseas events, opened its flagship London store this summer in the heart of St James’s, with an excellent members’ reception. We also welcomed Bentley Motors to Smith’s Lawn for the first time to support The Royal Windsor Cup and were delighted to welcome HM The Queen and our President to the 60th edition of this 15-goal final. So we head into our 61st year in a strong position. I would

like to take this opportunity to personally thank our CEO Neil Hobday and Polo Manager Antony Fanshawe and all the team at Smith’s Lawn for their continued focus, drive and dedication. Such commitment will ensure Guards Polo Club remains the Number One Club in Europe for many more years to come.
