hours leaves them with tired legs for several days. How then, is a shopworker or health care assistant or anybody else that walks around in their workplace all day, going to find the energy to keep fit and healthy? Unfortunately, it appears that

workplace activity isn`t enough to keep you fit and slim unless you are a fisherman, scaffolder or something equally strenuous. At best, the standing up can help your posture (if you wear sensible footwear) and will burn some calories. Mainly, it just makes you tired. One of the hardest things to deal

Be strong. When the biccies come round, pinch your waist. Do you want it to get any bigger? Sugar is highly addictive but if you can go without for one month the cravings will diminish. What can you do to relieve the tiredness after a day

When the biccies come round,

with if you are trying to keep fit and healthy whilst doing “indoors manual work” is the biscuit trolley. In some workplaces people take it in turns to bring in the doughnuts. It is very tempting to chomp biscuits and choccies all day when you are on your feet and working hard. Your first weapon against this temptation is to be

organised with your food shopping. Work out what you are going to eat at lunchtime for the coming week. Buy the food, then make sure, each day, you get up early enough to prepare it. Some people prepare wonderful lunches of nuts, avocado, salads and other delicious treats. Personally, being lazy in the kitchen, I make a couple

of boring sandwiches but at least they fill me up and keep me going until dinnertime without snacking. Please don`t make the mistake of buying prepared lunches, they are expensive and full of sugar, fat and preservatives. It is disastrous to start feeling hungry at work if you

haven`t brought a filling, nutritious lunch with you. That is when the munchies attack and before you finish your cuppa you will have eaten 500 calories of biscuits. on your feet? The lighter you are the less tired you will become at work. Your knees and hips will last longer too. So try not to get heavy in the first place. You don`t have to jog or cycle miles to keep fit. In fact, that may be the last thing you feel like doing if you have been on your feet all week. Consider other types of exercise and try to find one that you really enjoy. Gigging is an obvious choice in

Dartmouth and is a wonderful outdoors sport for those that enjoy being on the water. We also have Zumba classes, Pilates, Tai chi, tennis, dancing classes, swimming, kayaking and many other sports. There is nothing better for you than dog walking in the beautiful

Devon countryside. There are Ramblers and many other walking groups here for those that want to walk with company. I think it is very important for ladies to do some

weightlifting, especially as you get older. A pair of light dumbells is all you need to train at home. Fifteen minutes every few days is plenty and the results can be remarkable. Your children will be impressed, too. Bingo wings hate dumbbells! Agreeing to exercise with your workmates may motivate

you to start doing something. Join them for a jog or organise a company badminton evening. Maybe decide to do a sponsored walk together and train for it at weekends. Encouraging each other works and a text message from a colleague that has just achieved a new personal best will help get you off the sofa. Perhaps meet co-workers at the pool and swim twenty lengths together before you go for a coffee. You may even enjoy it! Good luck.
