Peter Johnson writes - CHRISTMAS IN DARTMOUTH IS A VERY SPECIAL TIME OF THE YEAR. Following the now well established Candlelit Dartmouth there is then a varied programme of musical and theatrical performances in the period leading up to Christmas and in the week leading up to New Year when the Dartmouth Players present their annual pantomime. Information on many of these events can be found elsewhere in By The Dart.

This year sees some new events added to Dartmouth’s Christmas programme. As a celebration of the fourth birthday of the Dartmouth Community Bookshop, two events will be held on 5th December. At 11am, renowned children’s author

Peter Bently will be talking about his new book “The Tooth Fairy’s Christmas” in the Dartmouth Library in the The Flavel. This is aimed at 2 to 7 year olds but all ages are welcome. Tickets are £2.50 per family and are available from the Library or by emailing dartmouth. library@devon.co.uk. The Community Bookshop will have copies for sales which can be signed by Peter. Later that day broadcaster and historian, Jonathan Dimbleby, will be presenting a lecture on his new book, The Battle of the Atlantic. The event also takes place at the The Flavel and starts at 3pm. Jonathan has kindly agreed to do this as a fund raiser for the Community

Bookshop and tickets at £10 are available from the Flavel box office on 01803 832318 or through their web site at www.theflavel.org.uk. Jonathan has written a sometimes controversial and gripping tale that transforms our understanding of the Second World War, The Battle of the Atlantic was – though often overlooked – crucial to victory in the Second World War. The

Community Bookshop will again have copies for sale and signing. Another addition to the programme of events this year is a Christmas market to be held on Saturday 19th December in the Old Market Square. Organised by market trader Jane Willis, the Dartmouth Christmas Market is being launched this year. It will feature many excellent stalls and will be a terrific opportunity to buy those last minute Christmas presents. Peter Johnson, who is an Associate Director of the Dartmouth’s Business Improvement District, says, “The BID have been looking at ways of adding more events in Dartmouth at this time of the year and the BID Board are delighted that the Community Bookshop and Jane Willis And the Market Traders have taken the initiative to improve Christmas in Dartmouth for both local people and visitors. I hope with the BID’s help this can be built on in future years so that Christmas becomes an even more special time”.
