he refurbishment of the George & Dragon posed a number of challenges. unusually there were three clients to be considered: the brewery, Heavitree, needed to have its investment protected

and increased; the Landlords needed to have a workable and practical building, reflecting their style and aspiration; and thirdly the clientele required that the design appeal to a wide audience by the creation of interesting spaces with a quality finish. the result is a destination pub with varied and appealing areas. the terrace room atop the building offers a café-style eaterie filled with light, while the bar area blends traditional and contemporary features creating a timeless interior. the historic side of the pub facing onto Broadstone has been carefully and expertly restored by the main Contractors, BDs of teignmouth. the outside
area has a refurbished bar, limestone courtyard,

parasols and height adjustable glass screens to provide shelter against the elements. when dealing with old buildings, projects rarely run smoothly and the whole project was delayed by two months after ascertaining that the ground below the new extension was to be built on reclaimed land. as Principal Designers and Project managers, we’ve

worked closely with the owners. once they had shown us a particular pub interior that they liked, we were able to add to their thoughts and ideas and collaborate with them to create the finished look. I had the idea of commissioning a flying metal Dragon sculpture for the atrium, and the clients were so taken with the idea they commissioned more sculptures, including a baby Dragon and nest. the team at Geoff sellick have been delighted to collaborate with the Landlords and Heavitree Brewery on this special project and look forward to hearing your views about our new George & Dragon.
