TRUCKING INDUSTRY PROMOTES SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY AT STATE CAPITOL

BY THE STEERING WHEEL STAFF Texas Trucking Association and

Southwest Movers Association hosted Trucking and Moving Day at the Texas State Capitol on February 18 in an effort to promote highway safety among motorists and educate Texans on new transportation technology. Industry executives from across the state were in town speaking to elected officials about legislative issues and took the opportunity to discuss the associa- tion’s priorities—safety, responsibility and efficiency on Texas’ highways. This event, set with the backdrop of the 84th Legislative Session, came on the heels of Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement setting transportation infrastructure fund- ing as an emergency priority. “Trucking Day is an opportunity to showcase the vital industry that Texas

trucking is,” said TXTA President and CEO John D. Esparza. “Many do not realize that trucks transport more than 2.7 million tons per day and one out of every 16 Texans are employed by the Texas trucking indus- try. The road is our work place and we must make certain all Texans know how to share our highways, ensuring a safe and effective transportation system.” In an effort to raise awareness among

Texas drivers, the association hosted safety demonstrations and exhibited the American Trucking Associations’ Image Truck, Interstate One. The 53-foot show trailer features a mobile conference room with seven screens, educational displays a truck simulator and room for interactive demonstrations. The truck is driven by America’s Road Team Captains, members of an elite million-mile, accident-free team

of professional drivers. “Trucking Day allows Texas consum-

ers and the motoring public to learn more about our captains of commerce,” said Esparza. “Since 1932, TXTA has been the voice of the trucking industry and it is our responsibility to educate Texans on high- way safety and provide information on how we get a great job done on our roadways every day.” To round out the event, Texas

Trucking Association hosted legislators and association members at an evening dinner with entertainment by the House of Rock and Roll Band Featuring Chairman Richard Raymond, Chairman Joe Pickett, Representative Bobby Guerra and Representative Sergio Munoz Jr. R
