ANOTHER RECORD YEAR 2015-2016 TXTA Foundation scholarship recipients


BY THE STEERING WHEEL STAFF Since 1978, the Texas Trucking


Association Foundation, a non-profit edu- cational, public relations, research and community service organization, has worked to promote the trucking industry throughout Texas. Core to the Foundation’s mission is providing scholarships for employees of and dependents of employees of member companies. The Texas Trucking Association


Foundation has selected 31 applicants to receive scholarships totaling $117,000 for the 2015–2016 academic year.


JOYCE AND HERBERT E. SKINNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Established in 2008, the scholarship is awarded to the top recipient as selected by the TXTA Foundation Board of Trustees. The recipient receives an additional $2,000 scholarship.


Bailey Leavitt of Glendale, Arizona, is the recipient of the Herbert E. Skinner Memorial Scholarship. A first-gen- eration college student, Bailey enrolled at


Glendale Community College after scoring in the top two percent of graduating high school students on the GED. As a sopho- more with a 4.0 GPA pursing an engineering degree, Bailey hopes to continue studying the STEM field at the graduate level. She is the daughter of Tyna Bryam, the founder and CEO of DOT Readiness Group.


STONEY REESE STUBBS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Established in 2011, the scholarship is awarded to the top Texas A&M University recipient as selected by the TXTA Foundation Board of Trustees. The recipient receives an additional $2,000 scholarship.


For the third consecutive year, Gilbert Costello III of Hondo, Texas, is the recipient of the Reese Stubbs Memorial Scholarship. Currently a junior, Gilbert plans to


attend nursing school and The University of Texas Health Science Center to earn his doctorate after receiving a degree in health from Texas A&M University.


The son of Gilbert Costello Jr., a driver for Refrigerated Transport, Gilbert adopted his father’s values and strong work ethic as he was often left to be the “man of the house” when his dad was called in to carry a load.


Lacy Acker of Nacogdoches, Texas, is a second year graduate stu- dent pursuing a master’s degree in agriculture with an emphasis in ani- mal nutrition at Stephen


F. Austin State University. With the ulti- mate goal of becoming a veterinarian, Lacy is currently gaining valuable experience as a veterinary assistant. She is the daughter of James Acker, a recruiter for Empire Truck Lines.
