PRESIDENT'S Message

A Week with Sharks Some footage of a surfer fighting for his life popped up this summer during the World Surf League Championships competition in Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. When I first saw the seven-minute video, it had already reached over a million views. A quick check at the time of writing this and it is now over 20 million. Initially, Mick Fanning did not think he was in any danger.

“I just can’t believe this, I am totally tripping out.” In a post-incident interview, within minutes of coming out of the water and with adrenaline still clearly pumping, Fanning tried to describe what had just happened before being over- taken with tears.

“I am happy to not to ever compete, ever again—to just walk away from this is amazing,” said Fanning. “I just can’t believe this, he bit right through my leg rope and took a bite of my board, I can’t believe I am unscathed, (looking into the camera) to my friends and family out there, I am ok—just tripping out!”

The competition had culminated into the finals and both competitors were in the midst of catching waves for the judges to determine a 2015 WSL World Champ.

Fanning was waving rival and fellow fierce competitor Julian Wilson to shore in the midst of the attack. Instead, Wilson began paddling towards his friend.

Locked in the world title battle with Fanning, Wilson was also interviewed immediately following and was asked about the outcome of the event.

INTO ACTION. AND WHEN YOU SEE THE FOOTAGE FOR YOURSELF— I DO MEAN FLY.

Still trying to comprehend, Wilson too was overcome with emotion in the mid- dle of the interview. “I was waiting for him to catch a wave, then I saw the shark go after him, then I lost eye contact and I thought we lost him.”

Wilson went on to say that everyone knows the sharks are out there and the rea- son he avoids the so-called, feeding times.

“I tend to not surf out there early in the morning and late afternoon—but its 2:30 p.m., I’m still just shocked this happened,” said Wilson.

Great Whites just come with the territory in South Africa and for surfers; they have always been an occupational hazard. But no one had ever been attacked live on TV before—that is until now.
