The technology is helping the company

TRAINING IT PROFESSIONALS MUST BE A TOP PRIORITY, EVEN THOUGH IT MEANS EMPLOYEES MIGHT LEAVE FOR GREENER PASTURES AFTER ONLY A FEW YEARS.

ACCEPTING THAT REALITY REQUIRES A SHIFT IN MINDSET FOR AN INDUSTRY THAT PREFERS OFFICE EMPLOYEES TO STAY THERE FOR LIFE.

make a higher salary than an industry vet- eran. That will be tough for some people. “The old-school mentality of looking

at some of this technology as cost has got to change,” Kristynik said. “It’s an invest- ment. You’re investing in the future profit- ability of your company by getting this technology and getting the right technolog- ically-focused people in the industry.” Jetco uses technology in a variety of other ways. The safety team monitors that

camera footage and works with the opera- tions team in case a driver needs coaching. Driver histories and incidents are tracked so trends can be studied. Onboard global positioning systems let the operations team see where every truck is located on a map at all times. Dispatchers don’t have to be called in order to know when the truck has arrived or departed. “Our goal is eventually where the truck will almost be self-dis- patching itself,” Kristynik said.

better serve its customers, too. Every driver is equipped with a smartphone with an application so paperwork can be scanned. “We are able to real-time upload

proofs of delivery into our operating sys- tem, which customers can go in and pull,” Kristynik said. “Basically, within five or 10 minutes, they can see the actual proof, the paperwork that their loads have been deliv- ered through our operating system. ... That is something that’s not prevalent in our niche, for sure. It’s pretty cutting edge for what we do and who we compete against, for sure.” Even with all the attention being paid

to technology, Kristynik said many things haven’t changed. Data will play a role. But so will all of those old-school skills that always will be a part of trucking. “It can’t just be about the numbers,” he

said. “You can’t sacrifice the experience of what these people have seen and been there and done it and ‘I’ve seen it a hundred times.’ But when you can supplement that with the facts and the data and the analysis, then you’ve got the perfect storm.” R
