12 Maidstone Borough Council Liz Hazell has worked in the waste
industry for more than five years and as Waste Management Officer for Maidstone Borough Council for the past 18 months. Her team promotes residential recycling services and works to increase the amount of waste that is recycled or composted. She also looks after the council’s commercial waste service.
What attracted you to the job?
I have a passion for the environment and think that recycling valuable resources and re- using items when possible is very important. I had worked in the waste services department at the council before and jumped at the opportunity to return to help Maidstone achieve its ambitious target to increase recycling to 60% over the next 4 years.
What do you like most about your job?
Facts about the service Last year we:
Completed 7 million household collections.
Disposed of 55,915 tonnes of household waste.
Including 27,501 tonnes of recycling and compost.

I enjoy the variety of work on both the residential and commercial waste services. The role has enabled me to work on some exciting projects including an incentive scheme which is being implemented to promote the use of the food waste collection service.
