MAKE IT MAIDSTONE MAKE IT PROSPEROUS

Maidstone Bridges Gyratory Scheme

The ring road system across the river in Maidstone town centre is a congestion and air quality hotspot – especially at rush hour, so a new scheme has been developed to help improve things.

The scheme will see the construction of two additional northbound lanes (from Tovil in the direction of Junction 6 of the M20) on the eastern (High Street) side of the River Medway, with new junctions controlled by traffic signals. This means that northbound traffic on the A229 will avoid the gyratory system, and no longer

have to cross the river twice to reach their destination. The scheme will be funded by the South East Local Growth Fund, with a £1.14 million contribution from Maidstone Borough Council.

This will reduce congestion, and improve journey times by 15-20% at peak times. The scheme will also see improved pedestrian and cycle routes, and the introduction of landscaping schemes.

The main works will run for 4 months from June 2016. This will include 12 hour

working days and weekend working, making the most of increased daylight hours and running through the school holidays to get the work done as quickly as possible, limiting the inevitable impact on road users.

For more information as the scheme

progresses, keep an eye on future editions of Borough Update, the Maidstone Borough and Kent County Council websites and social media pages, and local media.
