‘’welcoming’ A CARE home in Bearsted for the elderly – some of whom have de- mentia – has earned praise from a government inspector. In an unannounced visit, the

Care Quality Commission found Hillbeck Residential Care Home in Roundwell to be safe, effective, re- sponsive, caring andwell-led, earn- ing it a “good” rating overall. The report said there were 37 people living at the home when it was inspected, adding: “People felt safe and staff understood their re- sponsibilities to protect people liv- ing with dementia. “The registered manager and

care staff use their experience and knowledge of people’s needs to as- sess how they plan people’s care to maintain their safety, health and wellbeing.” The inspector found policies and procedures for the safe administra- tion of medicines that staff fol- lowed and for which they had been trained; residents had access to GPs and were referred promptly to medical care if they became unwell. Residents and their families de- scribed the service as welcoming and friendly and the staff support- ive and compassionate, upholding their right to choose who was in- volved in their care.

Call to protect road’s cherry trees from axe

RESIDENTS in Salisbury Road, Maidstone want their street made part of a conservation area after two cherry trees were chopped down withoutwarning. Homeowner PatWalsh was horri-

It was home to a whole host of birds – sparrows, starlingsandcrows. We’ve even had a baby jay and a crested tit – birds which are on the RSPB’s con- servation lists.” KCC say the trees were inspected

and found to be diseased. They only inform residents if more than three trees are due to be felled. A spokesman said: “The tree out-

side No 52 had a large dead section over the carriageway and severe crown dieback, while a second tree, outside No 21, had major deadwood and 50% crown dieback. “These types of defect are usually

MrsWalsh said: “Surely we should be preserv- ing trees, not choppingthemdown?” Erica Longdon, who now faces a stark-looking stump instead of ama- ture tree, said: “The cherry trees cre- ate a spectacular display in the spring. We need to make sure no more are axed without proper con- sultation.”
