“If it comes from the heart then someone out there may never forget it. ”

Spring King are a garage pop band from Manchester. Zane Lowe picked their tune, City, as the first ever song to be played on his Apple Music Beats 1 radio show. People are going NUTS for them and their bouncy, upbeat sound, which they’ll be introducing us to at Norwich Arts Centre as part of Norwich Sound & Vision. I spoke to Tarek, the brainchild behind the outfit and his bandmates Pete and James about playing live and being funded by PRS to record an album.

How come you’re called Spring King? Is it after the reverb pedal? Tarek: When I was at University, I’d use so much Spring Reverb on all the recordings I was doing for bands that a friend of mine coined me the Spring King. I then found out about the amazing Spring King pedal, which I became obsessed with for the early live shows. How did the band come together? Tarek: I grew up on 60s love songs and a lot of punk and hardcore music. I always wanted to play in a garage rock band so I started one day. Te first song I ever wrote for Spring King was Let’s Ride. Pete heard it and persuaded me to keep writing. Eventually Pete joined, followed by Andy and James. I’ve known Pete and Andy since I was around 15. I met James on Facebook when we were looking for a bass

player! You were featured on NME’s Radar back in 2013 and have had a lot of support from the press and radio since then. What do you think it is about your music that people love so much? Tarek: I’ve been asking myself the same question since I started. I think its got something to do with our energy both live and on record. Pete: It’s definitely about the energy but for me it’s about the melodies. You’re supporting Slaves this autumn on tour and supported Courtney Barnett earlier this year. Who would you choose at present to support you at your own headline gig? Tarek: Tere are some great bands out there, and luckily a lot of them are friends of ours. I’d definitely beg Te Big Moon and Pink Film to support us. Pete: Move from Manchester are great.
