Villa Park seeking host families for Marine Thanksgiving

Make this Thanksgiving the

best day possible for a young ser- viceman far away from home. For the 12th year in a row, families in the greater Villa Park area are in- vited to share their Thanksgiving bounty with a Marine. Each year, over 100 young ser- vicemen from Camp Pendleton are on the waiting list, eager to go off-base and be welcomed to Vil- la Park and the surrounding area to share in the festivities. The first Marine Thanksgiving, initiated by residents Bonnie and Rick Barnett, was an informal, sponta- neous gesture. The appreciation of the servicemen, the gratitude of their families, plus the enthu-

siasm of the hosting families en- sured that the Villa Park Marine Thanksgiving would continue to be a rewarding holiday tradition. A member of each host fam-

ily takes a limousine from the Ralphs Shopping Center

to

Camp Pendleton to meet his/ her guests. Families and fanfare greet the returning vehicles, and each Marine receives a keepsake to remember the day. After pho- tos and greetings, the Marines, a minimum of two per family, de- part with the families for a day of food, football, family and fun. As in prior years, the private Tom White Motorcycle Museum will be opened to the Marines and

their families. To defray transportation and

gift costs, a donation of $120 per Marine is requested. For an appli- cation and more information on how your family can participate in this rewarding experience, please see villaparkmarinethanksgiving. org. Applications are also avail- able at Villa Park City Hall, and checks may be made payable to Rotary Club of Villa Park. To view photos from prior year Thanksgivings, and read com- ments posted by participating Marines, their grateful families and the host families, see the Villa Park Marine Thanksgiving Face- book page.

Opposition signs alert Peters Canyon users of the plan to build a paved bike lane across the park.

Speaker will share history at B’nai Israel

Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger will

tell harrowing personal stories as he recounts his past as a young man in post-war Germany, trou- bled by his parents’ shadowy past in the Nazi party. Understanding his own country’s history from newspapers and books, following the continued effects of anti-Semi- tism after the 1972 Summer Olym-

pics, Wollschlaeger struggled with his faith and identity and his ac- ceptance of his own decisions. The event will

take place at

Congregation B’nai Israel, 2111 Bryan Ave., Tustin on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for reserved seating and dessert reception, or $10 for unreserved seating. Call (714) 730-9693.

Signs have appeared around Pe-

ters Canyon Park in East Orange protesting a proposed paved bike lane. The signs were posted by Friends of Peters Canyon, a subset of the Foothill Communities As- sociation. The group opposes the pavement and favors the preserva- tion, conservation and restoration of this wilderness park. Many park users believe the addition of a paved bike trail through the heart of the park will disturb natural habitat and cre- ate serious safety hazards. “The Friends of Peters Canyon has many bikers in its membership,”

Opposition to paved trail in Peters Canyon swells

says Jane Rice, “mountain bikers and street bikers too. We’re abso- lutely in favor of connecting the existing bikeway segments -- we just oppose the routing through the park.” An online petition opposing the bikeway has garnered over 2,500 signatures. It can be accessed via a link at friendsofpeterscanyon. com.

The bike path project will be discussed at the next Orange County Transportation Authority meeting, Sept. 10, and Orange County Parks will regroup with the public later this fall.
