Slough-based Reckitt Benckiser Group, which has been producing top quality medicines, medical devices, hygiene and other home products for 150 years, was the main mover in the large company section of the region’s share price table during July. Half-year figures showing net revenue growth up 5% – aided by a favourable flu season – helped the shares up 12%.

Chief executive Rakesh Kapoor said the results confirmed the strategic focus on consumer health and hygiene is delivering sustainable growth and outperformance. “We now expect to exceed the targets we set at the beginning of the year. We are now targeting full-year net revenue growth of plus 4%,” he said.

Biggest share rise among the smaller companies was Twyford- based Accesso Technology Group, which is leading the way

with patented virtual queuing solutions and setting new standards in attraction ticketing around the world.

It was boosted by signing an exclusive long-term agreement with Merlin Entertainments Group to provide ticketing and e-commerce services across the operator's global portfolio. Installation will occur over three years at more than 100 attractions worldwide, including Legoland Parks, Madame Tussauds, SeaLife and the London Eye.

Star performance of the month was again in the sub-£50 million turnover section, where one of the schemes of Oxford Technology – which for more than 30 years has specialised in start-up and early- stage technology companies – rose an amazing 54%.

Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur competition closes September 30

The finalists and some of the judges from last year’s HWYE competition

What a great summer of sport we've had. F1 motorsport, Wimbledon tennis, Tour de France cycling, Women's Football World Cup, The Ashes, The Open, the Athletics World Cup – to name but some – and we're now gearing up for the Rugby World Cup. They are all wonderful competitions which give the very best in the field a chance to showcase their incredible talent

Never underestimate the power that winning competitions gives in terms of publicity. It's amazing how being mentioned on social media or in the press can boost the marketability of a business. And being able to put news of an award on your own company website or use a logo associated with it on your promotional material can attract the eyes of potential customers. Some of the past winners of the Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur competition (HWYE) have done exactly that to increase the attractiveness of their business.

Many of those who haven’t won but who entered the competition have told us that just the process of applying has given them greater focus on what needs to be done in their business.

Haines Watts won a competition title itself this year, the fourth time in a row, at the FDs' Excellence Awards – and you'll see it mentioned on the Haines Watts website among other places.

So, as a young entrepreneur, ask yourself is your business coasting or are you putting
