• Specialist insurance brokers and risk consultants JLT Specialty is celebrating more than doubling the size of its Reading office since its opening in May 2012. Peter Cant, head of the company's risk practice in Reading, launched the office just under three years ago with a team of five, to bring its specialist insurance


broking capabilities to the Thames Valley area. Since its launch the team has more than doubled in size and now boasts 12 permanent members of staff based in its Green Park offices. Clients include a wide diversity of local businesses including McKay Securities, Ascot Racecourse, Surrey County Cricket Club and Wingate Electrical. Cant has over 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry, having begun his career at JLT in 1983. He left in 1988 to run an independent broker for 17 years before re-joining JLT in 2005. The Reading office is looking to expand further throughout the next 12 months, with a particular focus on the engineering and manufacturing sectors, as it launches a new insurance package to cover the unique risks they face.


• Accountants James Cowper Kreston has strengthened its specialist VAT team with the appointment of VAT manager Nigel Waterfield. Waterfield joined the firm‘s existing VAT team on May 11 following a 30-year career at HMRC where he specialised in VAT. At James Cowper Kreston he will provide consultancy advice to clients, with a focus on disputes with HMRC, appeal procedures, alternative dispute resolution and complex negotiations with HMRC.


• A new partner with expertise in the health and care sector has been appointed to the commercial services division of Thames Valley law firm Blake Morgan. Gayle Curry, who is based at Blake Morgan’s Oxford offices, brings with her 23 years of experience in the health and social care sector. Curry is effectively making a return to the firm, having worked for Morgan Cole earlier in her career. Blake Morgan was formed by the merger of Morgan Cole with Blake Lapthorn last year. She has led on numerous high-profile matters for the department of health, health and social care commissioners and commissioning support services, the NHS and independent sector providers. In addition to working as a non-executive director in the NHS for three years, she has also completed a number of secondments, including one to the department of health’s commercial and commissioning directorates. Her appointment comes as Blake Morgan continues to grow and strengthen its teams across its key sectors following the merger.


• HMT LLP has announced the promotion of Robert Russell to manager working in the corporate finance and transaction support team. Since joining HMT in March 2014, he has worked within the corporate finance and transaction support team on various due diligence and lead advisory assignments including the acquisition of a major company within the food industry.


• Reading-based Country Estates Group has appointed Matthew Jeal as director of its residential division, Darcliffe Homes, and its commercial division, Country Estates, where he will oversee all land and planning activities to help drive the ongoing expansion of the business in the Thames Valley. Jeal originally joined the company in 2012 as land and planning manager and brings over 10 years’ experience in the development industry to his new role.
