I’ve never been one to fit in. Whilst most members of CAMRA are middle-aged blokes who enjoy a real ale from a dimple glass, I’m a little blonde chick who loves her ale in a handle, if you please. Not all my pub ventures are successful, but sometimes the best nights are the ones that don’t go to plan. Now ain’t that the truth.

After spending a weekend in Yorkshire, mainly in the Black Sheep Brewery, I discovered they were taking over one of my favourite Norwich locals a week later. Huh. I could have saved myself a few hundred miles round trip if I’d only waited. I was looking forward to trying the Velo ale (it was one of the few I’d not managed to sample Up North) but could only manage one pint; It had a very odd taste to it that I later found out was coriander. What? I’m not sure why anyone would want to put coriander in
beer (I’m not even a fan of it in food), and I moved on to trying (and talkin’ ‘bout) pale ale My Generation. Tis was much more to my taste, a stupidly drinkable (as my legs would find out later) session pale ale with an awesome pump clip (think Medusa if she was a festival-loving hippy. Google it, trust me). After a few pints I made myself go and talk to Black Sheep’s head brewer who had come to talk about his beers. Te most important thing he told me was that sparklers on beer pumps don’t do anything to the flavour of a beer, it just comes down to your personal taste. I wrote this fact down to tell my Northern mates at a later date. Feeling super confident, I asked the manager of the Fat Cat why I didn’t have a job behind the bar. In truth, it’s probably
because their profits might take a knock should I become staff rather than punter. After forcing down a few slices of pizza (it was delicious but I hate to take up good beer space with carbs) I ambled home, stupidly chuffed at talking to the head brewer of Black Sheep. It’s the little things. And beer.
