health & beauty

bed in full make-up and not seeing any downside is concerned. Fine lines and wrinkles will start to appear due to the break down of collagen and elastin in the skin. Your skin may start to look a bit rough with enlarged pores and tiny broken veins may be visible. A gentle exfoliator should be in your kit as exfoliating encourages the removal of the dead skin cells clumping together on the skin’s surface, contributing to the rough appearance. These cells are not going to be shed as quickly as they were in your twenties.

’s - your skin will be drier now no matter what type you have had in the past. If you

thought skin cell renewal had slowed down before, now it seems to be like the continents dividing. If you have smoked, lines will settle in around the eyes and mouth. Pre-menopausal activity will upset your skin’s balance and you may suddenly get break outs, sensitivity and oily patches for the first time ever. No problem! Upgrade your skin care routine again. A visit to a large department store for some advice from a trained consultant on one of the beauty counters is a good idea but do not be persuaded to buy into a complete range of products. All skin care can be mixed and matched and always use up what you have first or mix that in to your new regime. While these ladies will give good advice never forget they are there to sell. Go home with a bag full of testers before buying. These testers are not gifts but your right as a consumer to try before you buy. There will not be enough of the product to see if the results they claim to give are true but there is enough to see if you have a bad reaction or just don’t like the texture.

If you have not included your neck in your skin

care routine you simply must start now. The neck has very few fat cells so the skin will start sagging and looking tired before your face.

50

’s and beyond - loss of oestrogen will be impacting on the firmness, elasticity and

plumpness of the skin. Uneven skin tone and sun damage in the form of darker patches and spots will be clearly visible. There are many products that lighten the complexion, which have to be used in conjunction with a good sunscreen, applied daily before you leave the house. Invest in a good concealer if you can’t be bothered to lighten the patches.

Smoking, stress, poor skin care, constant dieting

and over doing the sun bathing will accelerate all of the visible damage to the skin. It’s never too late to avoid, cut out or cut down where you can. •
