Outline’s GUIDE TO
RADIO 1’s
BIG WEEKEND NORWICH 2015
We’re well chuffed that the BBC has chosen Norwich for the Big Weekend this year. But it’s not just about having a laugh watching live music with your mates. Oh no. It’s about encouraging and inspiring the yoot of Norfolk to learn more about possible creative careers and also to inspire and encourage local musicians to make the leap from Norwich to far beyond the Tickthorn Tervices. Big up our future Norwich pop stars and media heroes!
BBC Radio 1 Academy at Open
Te Academy will give 16-19 year olds in Norwich a huge and unique opportunity to get the lowdown on how to nab super rad jobs in areas like gaming, journalism and TV. And the chance to hang out with some celebs!
Te BBC Academy runs 9th-15th May at OPEN, right in the centre of the city. It’s made up of workshop sessions run by experts, live performances from bands like Te Maccabees and local acts Connor Mullally and Phoebe Robinson amongst others, and Q and A’s panels with stars of the creative industries, and it’s all completely FREE.
Sessions and workshops include a guitar masterclass with Lower Tan Atlantis, song writing with Ella Eyre, presenting the chart rundown live on Radio 1, game making workshops, a music Q & A with Annie Mac. And us! Yes, we’ll be running a workshop on music journalism at the Academy.
But who else is going to be there? Singer songwriter Jessie Jamal Edwards MBE, who has gone from creating his own YouTube channel to curating a stage at Bestival at the age of 25, #1 drum and bass duo Sigma, TV presenter Rick Edwards, vlogger and model Jim Chapman, YouTube megastars Jack and Dean, Radio 1 DJ’s and many more industry experts.
Loads of Radio 1 DJ’s will be milling about all week, and the Live Lounge will come from Open too. BBC Introducing will run two nights showcasing artists handpicked by Huw Stephens and featuring the best music from Norwich. Tere’s also an area called Te Hangout where anyone can literally hang out in (in the climbing wall room), where Greg James will be broadcasting his show from 4-7pm each day. Nick Grimshaw, Fearne Cotton and Scott Mills will also broadcast from there during the week.

You may not have come across BBC Introducing before but worry not. Outline’s here to tell you all about this most exciting of ways to get your music heard by VIP’s from the world of radio.
What is BBC Introducing? It’s a way that the BBC supports unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar musicians, and to provides a stepping stone for local bands and acts to get played on national BBC radio stations. To get your music heard by the BBC, just go to
bbc.co.uk/introducing and register with a Norfolk postcode; your tunes will go straight through to expert ears! Loads of acts you probably love started off with BBC Introducing; Huw Stephens has championed it from the start and continues to big up new bands. We love him for it. Tat and his beard.
What about BBC Introducing Norfolk? BBC Introducing Norfolk put out two radio shows a week, playing live sessions and recorded tracks that people have sent in via the magical uploader. You can hear them on Radio Norfolk (95.1 FM) on Saturday night 20:00-21:00 and Sunday night 18:00-20:00. If you want some help or advice on how to get ahead with your music career it’s a good idea to pop down to BBC Voices (downstairs from the Curve in the Forum) and speak to some of the friendly staff there who will be able to help.
Who’s local on the BBC Introducing Stage at the Big Weekend? Six local acts have been chosen to perform on the Introducing stage at Norwich’s Big Weekend; Claws, Franko Fraize, Kill It Kid, Harry Edwards and Context, plus a headline still to be announced! You’ll also be able to see some local acts play at the Academy at Open. Let’s make sure we represent for our Norwich crews!
